To remove the harmonic balancer, remove the right-hand front roadwheel nuts first, lift up the front of the vehicle and firmly place the vehicle on axle stands before removing the roadwheel, which will give better access after removing the wheel arch liner. Next, remove seven Torx screws to remove the engine undershield from under the car and remove the auxiliary drivebelt. The centre bolt securing the harmonic balancer needs slackening off, and this means the vehicle must be allowed to be supported adequately because of the high torque. Volvo technicians usually have a special holding tool that fits with the starter ring gear teeth after removing the starter motor - if not available, pick a gear and ask an assistant to apply the handbrake and footbrake and to release the bolt. After unscrewing the bolt and pulling out the balancer, it is very important to have a new bolt when reassembling and if necessary, remove the sensor ring/spacer and inspect the crankshaft oil seal to see if there is any sign of leakage. For refitting, the balancer is placed back on the crankshaft sprocket, the new securing bolt is fitted and tightened up to the maximum extent possible before the crankshaft rotates. Hold the balancer to prevent rotation and at first tighten the bolt to specified Stage 1 torque and then tighten the bolt through a specified angle Stage 2, using angle gauges if available. Finally, finish up the refitting by reversing the removal steps.
