Volvo S40 Oil Pump

The Volvo S40 Oil Pump is the core of the engine lubrication mechanism that forces pressurized oil to the bearings, pistons and camshaft to ensure that heat and friction are kept under heavy control and that all moving surfaces remain safely apart. Within the pump housing, there are sharp gears, springs and gaskets that withdraw the oil from the sump via a mesh strainer, push it through the filter and cooler and pump it to all the galleries at an approximate pressure of 10 psi per 1000 rpm. Volvo utilized various crank-driven designs in its Oil Pump during the course of production. There is a direct-drive version that encircles the crankshaft and rotates on a gear attached to the crank nose, with gear-drive and chain-drive units attached adjacent to the crank and rotating around similar gears or a short chain and sprockets. A third crankcase-mounted version is based on a different driveshaft, the hex ends of which should remain sharp to transfer torque. Every Volvo design has a pressure relief valve which opens when the readings are too high and needs to have a minimum clearance between the gears and the housing to contain pressure. An activated dash light or analogue gauge (when a switch is actuated or a sending unit is threaded in an oil gallery) alerts the driver in case the oil pressure drops. Since high-revving engines normally possess broad bearing clearances, Volvo performance manuals suggest that a high-volume Oil Pump be applied to ensure continuous movement, which maintains the durability of each of the S40 models.

Volvo S40 Oil Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: Should the engine be removed before addressing the issue related to the Oil Pump on Volvo S40?
    A:
While it is theoretically possible to accomplish this task with the engine in place, the process is recommended to be done without the engine first because of the amount of preliminary dismantling required and the limited access that makes the process very difficult. All the illustrations show the engine removed and held upside down on a work bench. In addition to the new pump gasket and other parts required, make sure that the necessary tools and facilities are available. Start by removing the timing chain and sump then undo the two bolts holding together the oil pump pick-up pipe to the oil pump and remove the O-ring/gasket. Next, remove the oil pump chain guide and oil pump chain tensioner, holding the oil pump drive sprocket to prevent it from turning while slackening the retaining bolt. After the oil pump sprocket and drive chain have been removed, unbolt the oil pump from the cylinder block/crankcase and discard the gasket. If there are the slightest doubts on the operation of the oil pump, the complete assembly should be renewed. Clean and degrease all parts, especially the mating surfaces, without damaging anything in removing the gasket. Prime the oil pump with clean engine oil and rotate its inner rotor prior to fitting the new gasket and refitting the oil pump to the cylinder block/crankcase and tightening the retaining bolts to the specified torque. Install the new O-ring/gasket and secure the pump pick up pipe back on. Refit the oil pump drive chain and sprocket by lining the flats in the driveshaft and sprocket and tightening the retaining bolt, holding the sprocket. Refit oil pump chain tensioner, guide, and make sure the spring is in place, and tighten their retaining bolts to the specified torque. Finally, reassemble the timing chain and sump.
