Turn the engine only in the direction of normal rotation which is the direction of rotation of the engine from right-hand side of the vehicle. To start you will need to remove the cylinder head cover. Apply the handbrake, jack the front end of the vehicle and place it on axle stands. Remove the right-hand front roadwheel and the cover from under the right-hand front wheel arch. Slacken the water pump pulley retaining bolts about three turns. Remove the auxiliary drivebelts. Undo the screws that hold the protective cover over the air conditioning compressor, disconnect the wiring plug, undo the compressor mounting bolts and the refrigerant pipe bracket bolt and then move the compressor to one side and suspend it with wire or a strap from the vehicle bodywork or suspension, taking care not to disconnect any refrigerant pipes. Remove the crankshaft pulley and the crankshaft position sensor wiring connector. Unscrew the retaining bolts and remove the water pump pulley. Disconnect the wiring harness from the studs on the bottom of the timing chain cover. Lift the coolant expansion tank from its mountings and move it aside, if it is necessary to have more access to it, drain enough coolant and disconnect the lower coolant hose from the expansion tank. Use a trolley jack and a block of wood under the sump to support the engine, then unscrew the nuts or bolts doing up the engine or transmission right-hand mounting bracket and remove the mounting from the engine, (unclipping the air conditioning pipe as the mounting is removed). Remove the auxiliary drivebelt tensioner lower screw and unscrew the timing chain cover retaining bolts, remembering the placement of the bolts for refiting, then remove the timing chain cover from the engine. For refitting, clean sealant from the timing cover, cylinder block and cylinder head mating surfaces, being careful not to scratch or damage the components. Renew the timing chain cover oil seal that is fitted on the front of the crankshaft and ensure the drive shim is still fitted onto the end of the crankshaft before refitting the timing chain cover oil seal. Provided that the appropriate mating surfaces are clean and flat, then place 3.0mm bead of silicone sealant on timing chain cover and inner bolt holes, and ensure the timing chain cover is fitted within 10 minutes of sealant application. Finally, tighten the timing chain cover bolts according to the torque standards.
