The air cleaner assembly is on the driver's side of non-turbocharged engines near the radiator, with turbocharged engines, it is on the passenger side near the radiator. Begin by disconnecting the negative battery cable and then unsnap the clips that hold the air cleaner housing halves together and separate them. Remove air cleaner cartridge and for installation, insert the new air cleaner cartridge in the lower housing. Next, place the housing halves together and then snap the retaining clips in place before reconnecting the negative battery cable.

How to replace the air filter element on Volvo V40?

Release the spring clips that hold the air filter lid in the housing, and if needed, disconnect the wiring connector from the mass airflow sensor so as not to strain the wiring. Remove the air filter by lifting off the lid. Wipe clean inside housing and lid with cloth taking care not to sweep debris into air inlet on the lid of air filter housing particularly on turbo models. Fit the new filter in the right way up and press the seal on the rim of the filter into the groove on the housing. Finally, refit the lid while securing it with the spring clips.
