Volvo V50 Air Filter

The Volvo V50 Air Filter protects the engine by filtering air entering the engine, only allowing clean oxygen to pass to the cylinders. Each Volvo engine draws approximately 10,000 gallons of air per gallon of fuel, so its filter must filter dust, sand, leaves, and particles no larger than 5 microns but still make the airflow powerful and strong. On the petrol and diesel versions of the compact wagon, the flat panel filter is mounted in a sealed air box linked to the throttle body via a duct; all the intake flow must pass through the fibrous media. Previous Volvo models were built with round components which attached to the top of a carburetor, whereas the V50 fuel injection equipped car is made with a rectangular panel design that is easily changed by unfastening a few clips. The Air Filter gets blocked, asphyxiates the motor, reduces power and fuel economy, and the owner should examine it at every service and have a new Air Filter fitted when the pleats appear dark or clogged. The OEM component employs pleated paper, which is the highly economical and efficient filtering material and can provide good filtration without the maintenance cost of the oiled cotton designs. Using a true Volvo replacement part will guarantee that the housing closes properly and does not create a vacancy where unfiltered air will enter and ruin performance and damage internal components with abrasive particles.

OEM parts are the only choice for top quality and real functionality. They pass strict checks, and they match Volvo's factory specs, so installation is easy. Volvo V50 Air Filter Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What precautions should be taken when driving with the air cleaner filter element removed, and how should the air filter be serviced for Petrol engines on Volvo V50?
    A:
Never drive the vehicle with the air cleaner air filter removed, as excessive engine wear could result, and backfiring could even cause a fire under the bonnet. For 1.8 and 2.0 litre models, the air filter is located in the air cleaner assembly on the left-hand side of the engine compartment. Remove the 6 Torx screws securing the cover to the air cleaner housing, then lift the left-hand end of the cover to remove the air filter. The cover can be completely removed for a more thorough cleaning of the filter housing. Loosen the clip and disconnect the air inlet duct from the air cleaner, then withdraw the cover and remove the air filter, noting its direction of fitting. For 2.4 litre models, the air filter is located at the front of the engine compartment; undo the 2 screws and pull the air filter holder from the air filter housing, then pull the air filter from the holder, noting its orientation. For all models, if carrying out a routine service, the air filter must be renewed regardless of its apparent condition. If checking the air filter for any other reason, inspect its lower surface; if it is oily or very dirty, renew the air filter. If it is only moderately dusty, it can be re-used by blowing it clean from the upper to the lower surface with compressed air, as it cannot be washed or re-oiled. If it cannot be cleaned satisfactorily with compressed air, renew it. After removing the air cleaner cover, wipe out the inside of the housing and check for any foreign matter in the air intake or air mass meter. Refitting is the reverse of the removal procedure, ensuring that the air filter is fitted the correct way up, that the air filter and cover are securely seated to prevent unfiltered air from entering the engine, and that the cover is secured with screws and the air inlet duct securing clip is fully tightened.
