Volvo V70 Oil Filter

The Volvo V70 Oil Filter is the initial line of defense because it captures dirt and metallic particles and allows the free flow of life-giving oil. It filters contaminants out of the hot, pressurized oil, and the engine continues to deliver its power and fuel economy over thousands of miles without letting abrasive sludge reach the bearings. The Oil Filter has pleated media of cellulose, synthetic fibers, or a combination of both to filter debris with an efficiency rate of up to ninety-nine percent, but the woven channels remain open enough not to choke the pump. There have been two predominant designs of the V70 over the years that Volvo drivers have witnessed. Early models applied a spin-on full-flow Oil Filter unit, whose design, made of steel, screwed directly onto the block and incorporated the filter element, housing, and anti-drainback valve in one disposable unit. Subsequent Volvo models were built in a cartridge format which inserts into a permanent alloy cup, which reduces waste and enables a more convenient check of the captured grime, although it remains a full-flow design and retains a permanent alloy pressure relief valve to prevent damage caused by bursting in cold starts or when thick oil is applied. In any style, the Oil Filters need to retain enough grime to last until the next scheduled oil change, since once the Oil Filter media becomes clogged the bypass pressure doors open and grimy oil may be forced through the engine, which will cause expensive wear in a Volvo engine.

Volvo V70 Oil Filter Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What should you consider regarding the oil filter before beginning the oil change procedure for diesel engines on Volvo V70?
    A:
Before you start the procedure make sure you have all the tools you need and lots of rags or newspapers in case of spillage. It is best to change the oil when the engine is warmed up to normal operating temperature as warm oil and sludge flow out easier; but avoid touching hot parts of the engine. To be protected from skin irritants and contaminants contained in used engine oils, it is a good idea to wear gloves. Access to the underside of the vehicle is easier if the vehicle is lifted on a hoist, run up ramps or held up in axle stands ensuring the vehicle is level or that the drain point is at the bottom of the vehicle. Remove the engine undershield to gain access to the sump and drain plug, place a draining container under the drain plug and unscrew it keeping the drain plug pressed into the sump while unscrewing the last couple of turns. Allow the oil to drain completely, removing the drain plug sealing washer and fitting it with a new one after cleaning the drain plug and drain plug threads. The oil filter is at the front side of the engine and can be accessed from above by pulling the plastic cover straight up. Use a 36 mm socket or adjustable spanner to undo the filter cover and remove the old filter element and discard the old O-ring seal and fit a new one. Clean the inside of the filter housing and cover with a lint-free rag, put a light coating of good engine oil on the new O-ring sealing and fit it to the filter cover before inserting the filter element and turning the cover tightly to specified torque. After having removed the old oil and tools that are under the vehicle, lower it to the ground, remove the dipstick and oil filler cap and fill the engine with the correct grade and type of oil, adding half of the recommended amount first and then adding oil until the oil mark on the dipstick is reached. Start the engine and let the oil pressure warning light go out while checking for leaks around the oil filter seal and drain plug and refit the engine undershield. After switching off the engine and letting the engine oil settle, recheck the dipstick level and add more oil if needed. Finally, dispose of the used engine oil in a safe manner and within the scope of environmental regulations.
  • Q: What should you consider regarding the oil filter before beginning the oil change procedure for petrol engines on Volvo V70?
    A:
Before starting the procedure, make sure that you have all the tools and lots of rags or newspapers for spills. It is best to change the oil when the engine is warmed up to normal operating temperature, as warm oil and sludge flows out more easily, however, be careful not to touch hot parts of the engine. To protect yourself from the possible skin irritants in used engine oils it would be a good idea to wear gloves. Access to the underside of a vehicle is aided by using a hoist, ramps or axle stands to ensure the vehicle is level or the drain point is at the lowest point. Remove the engine under shield to get to the sump and filter. Position a draining container under the drain plug and unscrew it while holding the plug into the sump by the pressure of unscrewing the last couple of turns. Allow the oil to drain completely, checking the condition of the sealing washer on the plug and renewing if necessary. The oil filter is at the base of the sump on the front right-hand side, put the draining container under the oil filter, slacken it with a suitable tool and unscrew it by hand, being ready for some spillage. Empty the old filter's oil into the container and pull out the old filter element, discarding the C ring seal and installing a new one. Clean the cylinder block around the filter mounting with a lint-free rag and spread a light coat of clean engine oil over the new O-ring seal and fit it to the filter cover before applying the new filter element and tightening down the filter to a specified amount of torque. After the old oil and tools have been removed underneath the vehicle, lower it to the ground. Remove the dipstick and oil filler cap and fill the engine with the correct grade and type of oil (start with half the amount specified on the dipstick and let it stand before adding more until it is at the bottom mark). Start the engine and keep an eye on the oil pressure warning light and also check for leaks around the oil filter seal and the drain plug while running the engine for a couple minutes. Having turned off the engine, wait until the oil has settled again, then check the dipstick level again and add more oil if needed. Finally, safely dispose of the used engine oil according to environmental regulations.
