Volvo V70 Cylinder Head

The main functions of the Volvo V70 Cylinder Head are to shape the closed head of every combustion chamber and direct the air and fuel inward and the exhaust outward so that the engine breathes freely. Spark plugs, valve guides, seats, and springs are located in the Cylinder Head architecture as the traffic controller of incoming charge and outgoing gases. A hardened gasket can be applied to seal the joint to the block, and Volvo recommends that stretch-to-yield head bolts be tightened to the maximum, resulting in even clamping, which prevents coolant or oil spills and seals compression. Throughout its history Volvo made two overall head constructions for the model. Economy versions can be fitted with tough cast iron that is prized due to its longevity, and performance-oriented versions can use aluminum, which is lighter, dissipates heat quicker, and gives the front a better weight balance, allowing a higher compression ratio to provide the punch as needed, making a V70 tuned to be mileage or power oriented have the right balance between strength and flow. No matter the metal, all Cylinder Heads include additional material in the area of the important ports to allow passages to be smoothed to allow improved airflow without sacrificing water jackets. Some of the common faults are crooked decks or cracks that can admit combustion gases into coolant, burned valves that can shut down a cylinder, and rusted guides that can rob horsepower. Failure of the Cylinder Head gasket between cylinders can cause misfiring of the engine, and overflow of coolant into a passage can cause overheating, but when in good condition the Volvo unit continues to deliver power in a crisp and reliable manner.

Volvo V70 Cylinder Head Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and refit a cylinder head for petrol engines on Volvo V70?
    A:
To remove the cylinder head, first remove the battery negative leg, drain the engine coolant, and remove the intake and exhaust manifold. Next, remove the Camshafts and tappets, and if necessary, remove the bolt that holds the timing belt rear cover to the cylinder head. Remove the earth lead(s), if not already removed, at the rear of the cylinder head. Slacken the clips and separate the radiator top hose from thermostat housing and radiator and remove the expansion tank hose from the thermostat housing. Undo the two bolts that hold a coolant pipe flange to the cylinder head and slacken the bolts for the cylinder head slowly in the specified order before removing it. Remove the cylinder head and place it on some wooden blocks to prevent burning the valves and recover the old head gasket. For the preparation before refitting, make sure the mating faces of the cylinder head and block are clean with a plastic scraper just to remove the gasket and carbon residues but be careful not to damage the aluminium alloy. To prevent carbon contamination seal the water, oil and bolt holes in the cylinder block and thoroughly clean the pistons. Inspect mating surfaces for any damage, and when there is suspicion of warpage, inspect with straight edge. Make sure the cylinder head bolt holes are clean and dry, using a tap or an old head bolt to clean the holes. For refitting, take a new head gasket and place it on the cylinder block, remembering to make sure that it is oriented correctly, then drop the head into place and coat the threads on the new cylinder head bolts with light oil. Tighten the bolts in the specified sequence to the required torque stages then refit the coolant pipe flange with new gasket and bolts. Reconnect the radiator top hose, timing belt cover holding bolt and rear earth lead bolt. Finally, reinstall the camshaft and tappets (but still do not connect the battery) and then the intake and exhaust manifolds and refill the engine cooling system.
  • Q: How to remove and refit a cylinder head for diesel engines on Volvo V70?
    A:
To remove the cylinder head, first disconnect the battery negative lead, jack up the vehicle's front and secure the vehicle on axle stands. Drain the engine oil and cooling system and then loosen the clips and disconnect all the coolant and vacuum hoses from the cylinder head, noting their places. Remove air cleaner assembly, Timing Belt, Camshafts, rocker arm and hydraulic tappets. Remove the power steering pump support bracket, fuel rail and fuel pipes from the cylinder head, removing the heat shield above the exhaust manifold. Slacken the EGA pipe clamp Undo the bolts holding the EGA valve/cooler/pipe assembly Remove the front section of the exhaust pipe. Disconnect the oil return and supply pipes from the turbocharger and engine block, and the turbocharger outlet pipe and vacuum hose. Carefully lower the turbocharger and manifold assembly, discarding the turbocharger oil supply and return pipe sealing washers. Undo the bolts that hold the coolant pipe to the cylinder head, make sure all the wiring plugs are disconnected and beginning at the end, slacken the cylinder head bolts until they can be removed by hand, discarding the bolts. Lift the head away from the cylinder block, taking care not to damage the sealing face, and remove the gasket from the top of the block, taking note of the identification holes. For inspection, make sure that the mating faces of the cylinder head and block/crankcase are free of dirt, gasket and carbon traces, and examine for nicks or scratches. If there is suspicion of warpage, check for distortion using a straight-edge, and clean out the cylinder head bolt drillings. For refitting, check the old cylinder head gasket for identification markings, making sure the new gasket is the same, unless new pistons have been fitted. Lay the new head gasket on the cylinder block, put the cylinder head in the center and put grease on the threads and underside of the new bolts. Tighten the bolts in the specified sequence to their torque settings, angle tightening them as needed, and finish the job by refilling the cooling system and adding engine oil.
