- Q: What tools are needed for locking the camshaft and valve lifter during the refitting procedure for petrol engines on Volvo V70?A:For this procedure Volvo tools 999 5452, 999 5754, 999 5453, and 999 5454 are required to lock the camshafts in position in the Cylinder Head during refitting and to pull the upper section into place, details for fabricating home-made alternatives are provided. Begin by draining the cooling system, removing the Timing Belt and removing the air cleaner assembly and intake ducts for access to the camshafts. Remove the charge air pipe from turbocharged engines and seal the openings. Remove the cross stay & its bracket, disconnect the wiring of the camshaft position sensor and remove the relevant bracket & plugs, for both turbo & non-turbo models. Lock the camshafts in the right position before removing the sprockets, marking them for identification. Remove ignition coils, disconnected hoses and wiring and then remove bolts holding the cylinder head upper section and gently pry it off without damaging its mating surfaces. Inspect cam lobes and tappets for wear, clean mating surfaces thoroughly, as well as inspect valve clearances, if necessary. For refitting, the oil the tappet bores and camshaft bearings, insert the tappets and make sure the mating faces are clean. Spread liquid gasket on the top part, place the camshafts properly, lock them in place and lay the top part on the bottom part. Use pull-down tools to fix the upper part, tighten the retaining bolts in a diagonal order, and then remove the tools. Lubricate and fit new camshaft oil seals, refit sprockets and timing belt and refill cooling system upon completion.
- Q: How to remove and refit the Camshaft, Rocker Arm and Valve Lifter for diesel engines on Volvo V70?A:To remove the intake camshaft sprocket, first remove the camshaft cover and remove the screw that holds the timing inner cover to the right-hand camshaft bearing cap. Next remove the vacuum pump and the fuel pump and undo the screws attaching the left and right-hand camshaft bearings/sealing caps and being careful take note of their positions with a marker on the cap marking them with numbers from the end of the timing belt if needed. Gradually loosen each bearing cap screw on the intake camshaft until it is no longer under tension, and then remove the screws and caps, repeating the procedure for the exhaust camshaft. Lift out the camshafts and remove the oil seal from the intake camshaft, carefully lift the rocker arms and valve lifters from the Cylinder Head and mark their position. Unclip the valve lifters from the rocker arms and examine for damage, replacing as needed. Spin a roller on each rocker arm to listen for any noise and check the cam lobes and bearing journals for wear. For refitting, clip the individual lifters on the rocker arms, check the lifter bores are clean, lubricate and lower the lifters on the rocker arms in their original place, and check the rocker arms are correctly located over the valve stems. Clean and lubricate the camshaft bearing locations, align the camshafts so that the marks on the drive gears align, and lower them into place, lubricating the journals. Refit the camshaft bearing caps and screws, hand-tightening them evenly and then tightening the screws a little more until they come into contact with the cylinder head, then tightening to the specified torque. Insert a camshaft locking pin into the cylinder head and camshaft sprocket, sealing the mating surfaces of the bearing/sealing caps with sealant and re-assemble and tighten the screws to the specified torque. Clean the oil seal seating in the bearing cap, and oil the lips of the new camshaft oil seal and gently tap it into position, having wrapped adhesive tape around the end of the camshaft. Finally, complete the refitting by tightening all fasteners on the specified torque and waiting at least 30 minutes for the valve lifters to settle before turning the engine over.
