Volvo V70 Belt Tensioner

The main purpose of the Volvo V70 Belt Tensioner is to ensure that the engine drive belt is tight to ensure that the power generated by the crankshaft is safely directed to the parts such as the alternator and water pump. It accomplishes this by being made of a basic but strong factory Volvo assembly called the Belt Tensioner that is a grooved pulley, one that is pivoted, a coiled spring, and a solid base, which when combined have been designed to push the belt with the force it requires but can easily be removed when needed. In years of production the model has utilized two primary styles of tensioning, an early adjustable model that was based on manual adjustment of the belt slack, or the widely found one of today an automatic model the internal spring of which automatically readjusts itself and keeps the belt quiet and nonslipping over time. Regardless of which style is installed, failure warning features remain the same, such as squeaks during start-up, grinding from worn bearings, frayed belt edges, visible cracks, or red-brown rust streaks between the arm and base. Any disregard of such cues can lead to bad charge-ups, excessive heat, or the steering assist failing to work since the belt will not be able to power the connected systems. To maintain proper preload and increase the life of the belts, replacing the entire assembly instead of just the pulley maintains proper tension. Proprietors of the second-generation Volvo observe that a healthy Belt Tensioner does take on the additional obligation to guard part bearings, and the same rule holds in every Volvo on the road, the component being a minor but important part of happy day-to-day travel in any V70.

Volvo V70 Belt Tensioner Parts and Q&A

  • Q: Should the Belt Tensioner and Cam Gear be replaced whenever the timing belt is renewed on Volvo V70?
    A:
Whenever the Timing Belt is renewed, the tensioner and idler pulley should also be renewed at the same time. To remove the timing belt tensioner, remove the timing belt and then remove the center bolt and tensioner. Roll the tensioner roller to see if there is any sort of rough or noise (indicating bearing wear), if in doubt renew the tensioner. For refitting, the tensioner must be put back in place, then the bolt can be put in place without tighten it completely by making sure the tensioner fork finds the right place over the rib on the cylinder block, then refit and tension the timing belt. To remove the camshaft sprocket, remove the timing belt, unscrew the bolts on the sprocket, while holding the sprocket in place, remove it from the camshaft. For refitting, take out the vacuum pump from the left-hand end of the exhaust camshaft and put a camshaft locking pin in the cylinder head and camshaft sprocket, and inspect the alignment of the crankshaft sprocket and oil pump housing. Turn the crankshaft clockwise about 15 degrees and then refit the sprocket to the camshaft, tightening the bolts to the point where there is still some movement between the two. Remove the blanking plug from the cylinder block, insert the crankshaft stop tool, and rotate the crankshaft counter-clockwise to the point where the crankshaft web of No 5 cylinder rests against the stop tool and check the marks on the alignment. Refit timing belt, have all the marks line up, and tighten camshaft sprocket bolts to the recommended torque, remove the locking tool and crankshaft stop tool, and refit vacuum pump and blanking plug. For the crankshaft sprocket removal, remove the timing belt, and if need be, use a puller to remove the sprocket, not levering it off to avoid damage. For refitting, clean the mating surfaces, ins attach the timing marks and fit the timing belt around the crankshaft sprocket, idler pulley, camshaft sprocket, coolant pump and tensioner pulley, refit the pulley to the sprocket and crankshaft nut (tighten it finger tight) and rotate the crankshaft in an anti-clockwise direction approximately 45 degrees. Stop the movement of the crankshaft, tighten the pulley nut and bolts to the specified torque, tension the timing belt and finish the refitting procedure. To remove the idler pulley, remove the timing belt, remove the bolt, and remove the idler pulley, and refitting is a reverse operation of removal and make sure all the bolts are tightened to their specified torque.
