- Q: What should you do if the starter motor fails to operate on Volvo 244?A:If the starter motor does not start, first check the condition of the battery by turning on the headlamps, if the lights are bright for a few seconds and become dull, the battery requires charging. If the headlights are still bright and the battery is fine, check the connections from the battery to the starter such as earth lead from battery terminal to body frame and from the start switch to the solenoid. If all connections are sound listen for a click from the solenoid when the starter switch is operated and if no click is heard then a fault in the solenoid is suggested and if there is a click but the starter motor does not turn then there is probably a fault in the motor itself. In either case, the starter motor will need to be removed to be able to inspect it.
- Q: How to remove the starter motor on Volvo V40?A:To remove the starter motor on non-GDI engines, the battery negative lead must be disconnected, then the inlet manifold. Unclip the plastic guard to the wiring terminals at the rear of the starter motor, undo the nut and disconnect the wiring from the rear of the starter solenoid. Unscrew the fixing bolts and carefully manoeuvre the starter motor away from the transmission bellhousing, noting the position of the locating dowel to refit the motor. For GDI Engines, start by removing the engine top cover and disconnecting the battery negative lead. The starter motor is at the back of the engine, at the bottom of the inlet manifold support bracket. Then remove the air cleaner and air inlet duct, and unscrew the upper mounting bolt of the starter motor. Raise the front of the car and support the car on axle stands. Remove the nut holding the main starter cable to the solenoid (the cable is also held by two bolted brackets at the base of the inlet manifold support bracket) and the smaller wire above the starter solenoid. Finally, remove the lower mounting bolt of the starter motor and remove the starter motor from the location.
