Volvo S80 Starter

The Volvo S80 Starter gives a mechanical jolt to the crankshaft and starts the engine using stored battery power as soon as the driver turns the key or presses the start button. The Starter is housed in a thick casing and powered by an electric motor, with the armature of the motor placed inside field coils or permanent magnets, and a heavy cable connecting an external solenoid to the battery. As soon as the ignition switch is turned to START, the solenoid connects the high-current circuit and pushes a small pinion forward so that it meshes with the flywheel ring gear, and then electromagnetic force propels the armature, turning the pinion and raising the engine to a self-sustaining idle, with an overrunning clutch holding the gears open as soon as firing starts. In the Volvo range, each S80 generation uses either a classic direct-drive or a more contemporary gear-reduction Starter. Direct-drive is a simplified design in which the armature shaft is directly attached to the pinion and requires a larger motor to provide sufficient torque. The gear-reduction type is a lightweight version with planetary gears between the pinion and motor that multiply torque, causing the Starter to crank at a faster speed and allowing it to overcome cold starts. This development keeps Volvo owners secure, while built-in neutral or clutch safety switches ensure that the engine cannot start when the car is in gear, safeguarding the driveline components and maintaining Volvo reliability.

Volvo S80 Starter Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and refit the starter motor on Volvo S80?
    A:
To remove the starter motor, first disconnect the negative lead on the battery. For petrol engines, undo the clamps and remove the air intake hose between the front panel and the air cleaner assembly. In turbocharged petrol engines, undo the clamps and take away the hose between the intercooler and the throttle control unit. Next remove the air cleaner assembly as described in the relevant part. If the starter motor rear support bracket is fitted, unbolt it from the cylinder block. Remove the wiring from the solenoid of the starter motor. Then, undo the bolts holding the starter motor to the transmission bell housing and carefully manoeuvre the unit from its position, making a note of where the locating dowel is, so that it can be ensured it is in position when refitting. The refitting process is the reverse of removal and all fasteners should be tightened to their specified torque where applicable.
