To change the alternator on petrol engines, disconnect the battery negative lead and remove the auxiliary drivebelt. On V70 models up to 2004, on turbocharged models, remove the clamps and the air intake hose and charge air pipe, and remove radiator cooling fan and the radiator shroud. Disconnect the wiring plug(s) and leads from the alternator, slacken the air conditioning compressor mounting bolts/nut and remove the alternator. For S80 engines dated up to 2004, remove the power steering pump without disconnecting the fluid pipes, disconnect the wiring plug/s and leads from the alternator, slacken the air conditioning compressor mounting bolts/ nut, and remove the alternator. V70 And S80 Models From 2005 Remove the power steering pump Disconnect the turbocharger hose (if applicable) Drain the cooling system Disconnect the radiator hose Disconnect the wiring multi-plugs and leads from the alternator Slacken the air conditioning compressor mounting bolts/nut Remove the alternator For diesel engines up to 2004, use a hose clamp on the power steering pump supply hose and disconnect the wiring plug/s and leads from the alternator and remove after slackening the air conditioning compressor mounting bolts/nut. For models from 2005, remove the plastic cover, undo the mounting strut, disconnect the charge air pipe hose, tilt the power steering pump forwards, disconnect the wiring multi-plugs and leads from the alternator, slacken the air conditioning compressor mounting bolts and remove the alternator. Refitting is a reverse procedure and care should be taken to tighten fasteners to specified torque. On diesel models the alternator drive pulley is equipped with a one-way clutch the alternator shaft requires a special tool to hold it while unscrewing the pulley. Remove the plastic cap, place the special tool in the pulley splines and unscrew the pulley anti-clockwise, and refit firmly with the special tool.
