To remove the starter motor, first take the battery negative battery lead off. For 1.8 and 2.0 litre petrol models, ensure that the front of the vehicle is raised and supported on axle stands, undo the 7 Torx screws to remove the engine undershield. Disconnect the wiring from the starter solenoid by undoing the nut and sliding the terminal off the stud. Move the wiring bracket aside (after undoing the retaining nuts), undo the starter motor rear support bracket if fitted and finally undo the mounting studs and the starter motor can be removed (throwing away the gasket). For 2.4 litre petrol models, remove the air cleaner assembly, unclip the coolant hose and bend the hose bracket aside for access to the starter motor bolts. Disconnect wiring from the starter motor, remove the mounting bolts and remove the starter motor, marking the position of the locating dowel. For 1.6 litre diesel engines remove the plastic cover on top of the engine, disconnect the battery negative lead and if fitted with the 80 kW engine remove the battery and battery box. For the 85 kW engine, remove the fuel filter, disconnect the wiring plugs and hoses and elevate the filter housing. Undo the 2 upper starter motor mounting bolts at the bell housing, lift the front of the car, and remove the undershield of the engine. For the 80 kW engine, remove the bolts holding the bracket to the subframe, disconnect the vacuum hoses and remove the vacuum capsule. Disconnect the wiring from the solenoid on the starter motor, undo the lower mounting bolt and remove the unit, taking care to get the locating dowels in the right place when refitting. For the 2.0 litre 4-cylinder engine, lift the front end of the car, support it firmly, remove the engine under-shield, undo the nuts and disconnect the wiring by pulling the plastic cover aside. Finally, undo the mounting bolts and pull the starter motor downwards. For 5-cylinder engines, you need to disconnect the battery negative lead, remove the throttle body assembly, remove the wiring harness clipping the starter motor, disconnect the wiring from the starter motor solenoid, and remove the motor by undoing the 3 mounting bolts.
