To remove the starter motor on non-GDI engines, the battery negative lead must be disconnected, then the inlet manifold. Unclip the plastic guard to the wiring terminals at the rear of the starter motor, undo the nut and disconnect the wiring from the rear of the starter solenoid. Unscrew the fixing bolts and carefully manoeuvre the starter motor away from the transmission bellhousing, noting the position of the locating dowel to refit the motor. For GDI Engines, start by removing the engine top cover and disconnecting the battery negative lead. The starter motor is at the back of the engine, at the bottom of the inlet manifold support bracket. Then remove the air cleaner and air inlet duct, and unscrew the upper mounting bolt of the starter motor. Raise the front of the car and support the car on axle stands. Remove the nut holding the main starter cable to the solenoid (the cable is also held by two bolted brackets at the base of the inlet manifold support bracket) and the smaller wire above the starter solenoid. Finally, remove the lower mounting bolt of the starter motor and remove the starter motor from the location.
