Volvo V40 Alternator

The Volvo V40 Alternator offers the essential advantage of converting engine movement to consistent electrical energy that maintains the battery as well as all other devices on the vehicle in operation. This Alternator comprises two cast aluminum halves and has a stationary stator, a belt-driven rotor, and front and rear bearings allowing the pulley to turn freely with a cooling fan forcing air through the case. As the crankshaft belt rotates the magnetic field of the rotor around the windings of stator coils, the law of Faraday comes into effect, and AC current is induced, and a rectifier fitted to it converts the current into DC current that the car actually consumes. A voltage regulator adjusts field current to ensure that the result is not too low or too high. The early Volvo versions depended on an external or simple internal regulator, though subsequent Volvo models incorporated the same into the powertrain control module so as to be better integrated with engine control. The fundamental Alternator layout remained unchanged over the years, but designers have applied two excitation types, either standard field coils or permanent magnets in more efficient compact units and enhanced cooling from basic air flow to directed fan blades for higher loads. Regardless of the generation, all Volvo systems are directed towards the same objective, which ensures that a V40 driver receives a reliable set of lights, infotainment, and starter power as long as the crankshaft is turning.

Volvo V40 Alternator Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove the alternator on Volvo V40?
    A:
To get the alternator off engines that are not GDI type, you first need to disconnect the negative lead of the battery, and then disconnect the auxiliary drivebelt. Unbolt the power steering pump from its mounting bracket and hang it to the front of the engine compartment without disconnecting the hydraulic fluid pipes. Slacken and pull back the bolt locking the top of the alternator to the triangular bracket on the rear of the power steering pump, and disconnect the wiring multi-plugs and leads from the terminal studs on the rear of the alternator. Next, slacken and remove the remaining alternator to inlet manifold bracket bolts and remove the bracket from the engine compartment. Finally, remove the top and bottom alternator mounting nuts and bolts in the front and rear and lift the alternator out of the engine compartment. On GDI engines, start by taking off the engine top cover and disconnecting the battery negative lead. Remove the alternator drivebelt adjuster bolt and its lockbolt, then with the front of the car raised and supported on axle stands, undo the alternator wiring from below the car, noting that the positive supply cable is covered by a plastic cap and held in place with a nut, while the grey wiring connector pulls off. From the alternator, remove the auxiliary drivebelt, and for models with air conditioning, remove the bolts that hold the alternator adjuster bracket to the engine and the bolt from the power steering hose bracket. Remove the pivot bolt nut and then manoeuvre the alternator out of its position, being careful to unclip the wiring for the oxygen sensor, if required. Refitting is a reversal of removal, ending with reinstallation of the auxiliary drivebelt.
