Volvo V70 Starter

The Volvo V70 Starter transforms electricity from the battery into rotational power, which cranks the engine to allow the car to start by just turning the key or pressing a button. In a Volvo a heavy cable is needed to connect the battery to an externally mounted solenoid, which, when the ignition switch is moved to the START position, conducts current to an electric motor mounted around a rotating armature and field coils or permanent magnets. When the armature is rotated by electromagnetic force, a little drive gear sticks out forward to engage with the flywheel ring gear, followed by an overrunning clutch pulling it back as soon as the engine catches to ensure that nothing grinds. All subsequent V70 generations retained the identical basic concept of the Starter with better materials. Over the years the majority of Volvo models have been based on this simple electric design, although two common styles have emerged. The older design employed a straight drive design, with the armature shaft and drive gear spinning at the same rate, while more recent gear-reduction designs add compact planetary gears which increase torque so that a smaller motor can provide the same punch, and reliability during cold starts is also enhanced. Both designs are based on the neutral or clutch safety switches through which the car cannot start in gear, and both are powered by tough brushes, commutators and massive wiring large enough to support high current. Proper maintenance of the Starter will guarantee the Volvo durability trademark.

Volvo V70 Starter Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and refit the starter motor on Volvo V70?
    A:
To remove the starter motor, first disconnect the negative lead on the battery. For petrol engines, undo the clamps and remove the air intake hose between the front panel and the air cleaner assembly. In turbocharged petrol engines, undo the clamps and take away the hose between the intercooler and the throttle control unit. Next remove the air cleaner assembly as described in the relevant part. If the starter motor rear support bracket is fitted, unbolt it from the cylinder block. Remove the wiring from the solenoid of the starter motor. Then, undo the bolts holding the starter motor to the transmission bell housing and carefully manoeuvre the unit from its position, making a note of where the locating dowel is, so that it can be ensured it is in position when refitting. The refitting process is the reverse of removal and all fasteners should be tightened to their specified torque where applicable.
