Volvo V70 Alternator Pulley

The main purpose of the Volvo V70 Alternator Pulley is to transmit engine rotation to the alternator in order to maintain the charge of the battery and continue operating all electrical devices. The first generation of this Volvo model had an early version that employed a solid style pulley, which is a straightforward metal wheel that rotates with the crankshaft and only had to actuate the alternator via its own belt. Due to the increase in creature comforts and one long serpentine belt beginning to push all the parts at the same time, Volvo changed to more sophisticated styles. The overrunning Alternator Pulley, or an OAP, is a mechanical device that allows the alternator to coast for a moment when the engine suddenly slows, eliminating vibration and noise when using a belt. Another such improvement is the overrunning alternator decoupler, or OAD, which integrates that free-wheel capability with an internal spring that smooths twisting forces, producing an even smoother idle and longer belt life. These two new designs are similar on the outside, but the OAD can provide additional torsional damping compared with the purely free-spinning OAP. Drivers may notice more consistent headlights and power for heated seats, audio systems, and navigation units since the alternator is able to turn more efficiently when it is heavily electrically loaded. The Alternator Pulley, regardless of the design that is under the hood of a subsequent Volvo, is still a small but crucial connection between the crankshaft and the contemporary comfort options of every V70.

OEM parts are the only choice for top quality and real functionality. They pass strict checks, and they match Volvo's factory specs, so installation is easy. Volvo V70 Alternator Pulley Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the alternator and alternator pulley on Volvo V70?
    A:
To change the alternator on petrol engines, disconnect the battery negative lead and remove the auxiliary drivebelt. On V70 models up to 2004, on turbocharged models, remove the clamps and the air intake hose and charge air pipe, and remove radiator cooling fan and the radiator shroud. Disconnect the wiring plug(s) and leads from the alternator, slacken the air conditioning compressor mounting bolts/nut and remove the alternator. For S80 engines dated up to 2004, remove the power steering pump without disconnecting the fluid pipes, disconnect the wiring plug/s and leads from the alternator, slacken the air conditioning compressor mounting bolts/ nut, and remove the alternator. V70 And S80 Models From 2005 Remove the power steering pump Disconnect the turbocharger hose (if applicable) Drain the cooling system Disconnect the radiator hose Disconnect the wiring multi-plugs and leads from the alternator Slacken the air conditioning compressor mounting bolts/nut Remove the alternator For diesel engines up to 2004, use a hose clamp on the power steering pump supply hose and disconnect the wiring plug/s and leads from the alternator and remove after slackening the air conditioning compressor mounting bolts/nut. For models from 2005, remove the plastic cover, undo the mounting strut, disconnect the charge air pipe hose, tilt the power steering pump forwards, disconnect the wiring multi-plugs and leads from the alternator, slacken the air conditioning compressor mounting bolts and remove the alternator. Refitting is a reverse procedure and care should be taken to tighten fasteners to specified torque. On diesel models the alternator drive pulley is equipped with a one-way clutch the alternator shaft requires a special tool to hold it while unscrewing the pulley. Remove the plastic cap, place the special tool in the pulley splines and unscrew the pulley anti-clockwise, and refit firmly with the special tool.
  • Q: How to remove and inspect the alternator and alternator pulley on Volvo V70?
    A:
Remove the alternator and set it on a clean work surface with the pulley facing down. Undo cover nuts and screw(s) and then lift the plastic cover at the back of the alternator by prising off the plastic cap, undoing the two nuts and one screw and lifting off the plastic cover. Carefully untighten the three screws and lift the voltage regulator/brush holder off. Measure the free length of brushes and check the measure against the specifications, renew the module if the brushes are worn down to below the minimum limit. Clean and examine the surfaces of the slip rings at the end of the alternator shaft and if it is excessively worn or damaged, the alternator needs to be renewed. Reassemble the alternator in reverse following the dismantling procedure.
