Volvo V70 Alternator

The essence of the work of the Volvo V70 Alternator is to convert engine movement into a continuous stream of electricity that keeps the battery charged and all the devices in the car running as you drive. The rotor is a belt-driven motor inside a small two-piece aluminum shell that rotates around fixed stator windings to induce a magnetic field, which produces an alternating current, which is in turn converted into the direct current needed by the vehicle electrical network by built-in diodes. The rotor shaft is supported by a front housing where the pulley and cooling fan are located, and after this comes the rear housing where the brushes, a rectifier, and, in most designs, a voltage regulator are located. The earlier Volvo models applied either an external regulator fitted with bolts or an internal regulator, but the later models, such as recent V70 models, allow the powertrain control module to do this electronically, avoiding undercharging as well as overcharging with much closer accuracy. Throughout the history of the brand, there are two primary forms of excitation, the classic field coils which require external current to produce magnetism, and the less common permanent magnet type which produces its own field and is easier to get going. Volvo vehicles have changed through the generations, moving the control of the regulators to the PCM and making the wiring less complex. Whichever the style, every Alternator should rectify three-phase AC output and supply the battery. In contemporary Volvo units, the vented housings and the front fan take care of cooling so that there is uniformity in performance under different loads on the engines. All in all, the Alternator has been transformed into an intelligent energy manager rather than a plumbed-in generator that is part and parcel of the vehicle's electronics.

OEM parts are the only choice for top quality and real functionality. They pass strict checks, and they match Volvo's factory specs, so installation is easy. Volvo V70 Alternator Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the alternator and alternator pulley on Volvo V70?
    A:
To change the alternator on petrol engines, disconnect the battery negative lead and remove the auxiliary drivebelt. On V70 models up to 2004, on turbocharged models, remove the clamps and the air intake hose and charge air pipe, and remove radiator cooling fan and the radiator shroud. Disconnect the wiring plug(s) and leads from the alternator, slacken the air conditioning compressor mounting bolts/nut and remove the alternator. For S80 engines dated up to 2004, remove the power steering pump without disconnecting the fluid pipes, disconnect the wiring plug/s and leads from the alternator, slacken the air conditioning compressor mounting bolts/ nut, and remove the alternator. V70 And S80 Models From 2005 Remove the power steering pump Disconnect the turbocharger hose (if applicable) Drain the cooling system Disconnect the radiator hose Disconnect the wiring multi-plugs and leads from the alternator Slacken the air conditioning compressor mounting bolts/nut Remove the alternator For diesel engines up to 2004, use a hose clamp on the power steering pump supply hose and disconnect the wiring plug/s and leads from the alternator and remove after slackening the air conditioning compressor mounting bolts/nut. For models from 2005, remove the plastic cover, undo the mounting strut, disconnect the charge air pipe hose, tilt the power steering pump forwards, disconnect the wiring multi-plugs and leads from the alternator, slacken the air conditioning compressor mounting bolts and remove the alternator. Refitting is a reverse procedure and care should be taken to tighten fasteners to specified torque. On diesel models the alternator drive pulley is equipped with a one-way clutch the alternator shaft requires a special tool to hold it while unscrewing the pulley. Remove the plastic cap, place the special tool in the pulley splines and unscrew the pulley anti-clockwise, and refit firmly with the special tool.
  • Q: How to remove and inspect the alternator and alternator pulley on Volvo V70?
    A:
Remove the alternator and set it on a clean work surface with the pulley facing down. Undo cover nuts and screw(s) and then lift the plastic cover at the back of the alternator by prising off the plastic cap, undoing the two nuts and one screw and lifting off the plastic cover. Carefully untighten the three screws and lift the voltage regulator/brush holder off. Measure the free length of brushes and check the measure against the specifications, renew the module if the brushes are worn down to below the minimum limit. Clean and examine the surfaces of the slip rings at the end of the alternator shaft and if it is excessively worn or damaged, the alternator needs to be renewed. Reassemble the alternator in reverse following the dismantling procedure.
