Volvo S40 Vacuum Pump

Volvo S40 Vacuum Pump provides the necessary negative vacuum to ensure that the brakes, HVAC doors and various emission control systems operate despite the fact that the diesel or direct injection engines in this sedan are not capable of generating the necessary vacuum in the manifold itself. Early designs made use of a small-sized diaphragm or piston Vacuum Pump, which was directly driven by the camshaft, and whose up-and-down strokes forced the air out of the booster circuit and the engine oil flowed through the housing as a lubricant. With the evolution of the model, Volvo applied rotary vane pumps attached at the end of the camshaft that rotate with the valve train, with their sliding vanes sweeping chambers to draw air and provide a more constant vacuum up to a maximum of twelve psi below ambient. In other versions the vane section is combined with a fuel pump to save space, and the new cars could use a separate electric unit that maintains the pressure low even on occasions of engine stop-start and does not steal mechanical power. No matter what style Volvo is, the pump does all the same functions, providing a light brake pedal, shiftable blend doors to provide correct cabin temperature, turbo geometry control, and EGR or exhaust flaps to reduce emissions. To keep the second generation S40 safe, Volvo owners should look out for an abrupt stiffening of the pedal, changes in air flow, rough idle since the solenoids lose their assistive function and a gauge reading that is lower than 8.8 psi as an indicator of failure of the Vacuum Pump that needs to be replaced.

Volvo S40 Vacuum Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and refit a vacuum pump on Volvo S40?
    A:
Only fitted to diesel engines, the removal process starts by removing the plastic cover from over the engine straight up from its mountings remembering that on 1.6 litre engines the cover may be held in position by 2 bolts. For the 1.6 litre engines, press the release button to separate the main vacuum hose from the pump, then pull the smaller hose from the pump, then undo the 2 retaining bolts to carefully remove the pump. In the case of a 2.0 litre 4-cylinder engine, remove the clamp for the EGR pipe from the vacuum pump and release the fuel pipe from the clips, taking care of the fact that the EGR pipe clamp is fastened by a nut. Depress the release button to disconnect the vacuum hose from the pump then undo the 3 bolts to remove the pump from the cylinder head, being prepared for spillage of fluid and discard the o-ring seals since new ones need fitting without dismantling the pump. For 5-cylinder engines, remove the battery and battery tray, undo the bolt for the pipe support the bracket located at the left hand end of the cylinder head above the vacuum pump, then undo the quick-release connector and disconnect the vacuum hose from the pump. Undo the 3 retaining bolts to remove the pump from the cylinder head again being prepared for the possibility of spillage of fluid and discarding the O-ring seals for new ones, with no dismantling of the pump recommended. For refitting, provide new O-ring seals for the pump mating face, locate the pump drive lugs to the slots in the end of the exhaust camshaft, and fit the pump to the cylinder head and tighten up the bolts to the stipulated torque ensuring the drive lugs are aligned with the slot in the end of the camshaft, the rest of refitting being a reversal of the removal process.
