Volvo S40 Turbocharger

The Volvo S40 Turbocharger allows the smaller sedan to perform like a bigger car because the Turbocharger uses otherwise unproductive exhaust to provide additional power and higher mileage. Its exhaust stream side is positioned facing the turbine; it is caused to rotate by hot gas flow, and it forces the compressor side, which rams a cooler, denser charge into the cylinders, known as boost. The engine burns more of its fuel by stuffing in more air than even a normal intake would allow it to take in, providing spirited acceleration without an equal increase in consumption. The Volvo car has had some Turbocharger styles over the years of production. A simple single-scroll unit uses a single flow of exhaust for all and is not complex but will lag as the pressure increases. More recent designs use twin-scroll designs, which divide the exhaust pulses to allow the wheel to spin faster and reduce lag, or use adjustable geometry designs, in which adjustable vanes adjust the gas flow to suit a broader power range. The new development is an E-turbo which incorporates a small electric motor to turn the compressor immediately to combine rapid response with reduced emissions. Both types of Turbochargers are based on the same fundamental principle, but the addition of single-scroll, twin-scroll, switchable vanes, or electric assistance gradually enhances responsiveness, efficiency, thermal control, and every subsequent Volvo feels stronger and cleaner than the previous one, a quality that is observed by many Volvo S40 enthusiasts on the road.

Volvo S40 Turbocharger Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How does a turbocharger enhance engine efficiency and what precautions should be taken during its operation on Volvo S40?
    A:
A turbocharger is used to increase efficiency in the engine, by forcing air into the cylinders, instead of letting it be sucked in naturally, by increasing the pressure in the inlet manifold above atmospheric pressure, and by adding extra fuel in proportion to the extra intake of air. The turbocharger is driven by energy from the exhaust gas which passes through the specially-shaped turbine housing, causing the turbine wheel which is attached on a shaft to spin, and which in turn spins a compressor wheel compressing the air inducted and sent to the inlet manifold. The compressed air then passes through an Intercooler which is an air-to-air heat exchanger located near the radiator to cool the air to improve density and further improve engine efficiency. The turbocharger has adjustable guide vanes that regulate the gas flow into the turbine, which are controlled by the engine management ECU, at lower speeds, the vanes can be closed to increase the gas speed and increase pressure, at higher speeds, the vanes can be opened to keep the engine boost pressure consistent, this is called Variable Nozzle Turbocharger (VNT). The turbo shaft is lubricated by oil from the main oil gallery, floating on a cushion of oil, a drain pipe returning the oil to the sump. Precautions must be taken because of the high velocities and high temperatures in the turbocharger; it should not be operated with exposed parts, which could be damaged or could injure somebody; the engine must not be raced immediately after start-up, to give the oil a chance to circulate. It is important to allow the engine to return to idle before turning off the engine to provide proper lubrication for the turbo, as well as to idle for several minutes after high speed runs. Regular oil and filter changes with high quality oil are necessary to avoid carbon buildup on the turbo shaft and possible failure.
