Before working on any part in the fuel system, follow the precautions. To remove the tank, first drain it of the fuel contained, as much as possible, in order to minimize any risks associated with working with fuel. Disconnect the battery negative lead, and then loosen the left-rear roadwheel bolts, chock the front wheels, jack up the rear end of the vehicle, and support it on axle stands, before removing the roadwheel. Next, take off the rear part of the exhaust system, while holding the front part to avoid strain to the part of the flexible. Undo the plastic nuts to remove the heat shield below the tank, then remove the clamps and go to the fuel filler and the breather hose, being ready for the spillage of fuel and renewing the clamps in worst case. If applicable, remove the carbon canister first, then press in the release buttons to release the fuel delivery and carbon canister pipes found in front of the tank. At the back of the tank, remove the pipe to the carbon canister by pressing in the release button. Set a trolley jack under the center of the tank using a protective wooden pad, set the jack to support the weight of the tank, then undo the retaining strings of the tank and carefully lower the jack and tank slightly. Disconnect the fuel sender/pump unit wiring connector from the top of the tank, lower the front of the tank, slide it forward feeding the hoses over the rear subframe and remove the tank from underneath the car. If the tank is contaminated, remove the gauge sender unit and
Fuel Pump and clean the tank with fresh fuel. The tank is made from synthetic material, so that if it has been damaged, it should be renewed, though minor repairs may be possible with some professional advice. When fitting a new tank, install all components from the old tank and always renew the seal between fuel pump / gage sender unit and tank. For refitting, follow the steps involved in removal in reverse, making sure to reinsert the sender/pump unit's wiring plug and dipping the carbon canister hose in the top of the tank before hoisting it up to its final position. After completion, top up the tank with fuel and check it thoroughly for leaks before driving.
