Volvo S40 Engine Oil Cooler Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and refit the Engine Oil Cooler for 1.6 litre diesel engine on Volvo S40?
    A:
To remove the oil cooler, it is first necessary to drain the coolant and engine oil, being careful to handle any fluid spillage. For models with the 85kW engine remove the diesel particulate filter. Then undo the bolts or studs to remove the oil cooler from the front of the oil filter housing, and reclaim the O-ring seals. When refitting, install new O-ring seals in the recesses of the oil filter housing and reattach the cooler, tightening the bolts securely. Remove the diesel particulate filter, if needed, reinstall the filter. Finally, refill or top up the cooling system and engine oil level as necessary, start the engine, and check the oil cooler for any indication of leakage.
  • Q: What steps should be followed for refitting the Engine Oil Cooler and ensuring proper sealing for 2.0 litre 4-cylinder diesel engine on Volvo S40?
    A:
New sealing rings will be needed on refitting so do check for availability before starting work. The cooler is mounted to the oil filter housing on the front of the cylinder block and access is from underneath the vehicle. Start by undoing the 7 Torx screws to remove the under-shield of the engine. In order to make access easier, remove the auxiliary drive belt, undo the mounting bolts, and move the air conditioning compressor to one side, suspending it from the radiator crossmember with wire or straps without disconnecting the refrigerant pipes. Next, undo the 4 retaining bolts to separate the cooler from the housing, recovering the sealing rings and being ready for oil or coolant spillage. For refitting follow the order of reverse disassembly but take care to use new sealing rings, properly tighten the cooler mounting bolts and, after work, lower the car to the ground. Finally, check and top up the oil and coolant levels if needed, and then start the engine and check for signs of oil or coolant leakage.
