Volvo S40 Water Pump

The Water Pump is embedded in the Volvo S40 and is applied to maintain the temperature of the engine by pumping the coolant via the block and radiator. It taps the liquid in the lower radiator hose, and the impeller turns on a bearing-mounted shaft to pump the liquid through the water jacket system that wraps the cylinder head and block, where the fluid takes up the combustion heat and is pumped back to the radiator to have its heat radiated by the ambient air. Most of the pumps applied in previous years employed cast iron housings, but present-day designs catering to the small Volvo S40 sedan involve using lighter castings of aluminum, which do not easily corrode and offer strength at the same time. A majority of the models operate via a mechanical belt to the crankshaft pulley, although in more modern examples some of the models introduced in upgrades are powered instead by an electric motor, with a significant reduction in parasitic drag and the engine computer having more precise control over the flow of the coolant. As the unit starts failing, some warning signs are leaks around the weep hole, growling sounds due to worn bearings, or unexpected overheating in case the impeller breaks. The location of the pump next to the timing belt zone therefore prevents the Volvo engine from suffering heat damage at high cost because it can be replaced in time. This trustworthy Water Pump system, be it belt or electric, has served as a noisy mute on the Volvo platform, and all subsequent S40s have the advantage of improved Water Pump materials that combine longevity with the steady passage of coolant.

Volvo S40 Water Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and refit the water pump on Volvo S40?
    A:
Before moving further, be sure to listen to some warnings given. Start by draining out the cooling system. For 1.8 and 2.0 litre petrol models, pull the plastic cover on the top of the engine straight up from its mountings, remove the auxiliary drivebelt and then slacken the bolts holding the water pump pulley using a strap wrench, to hold the pulley while you loosen the bolts. It is also possible to slacken the bolts in the pulley before removing the auxiliary drivebelt. Next, remove the bolts and pull the pulley from the water pump, then undo the three bolts to remove the water pump and discard the O-ring seal. For 2.4 litre petrol ones, timing belt, retaining bolts and water pump are to be removed, and the access to these components may be limited and a little engine adjustment is required. Thoroughly remove all of the old gasket from the pump and cylinder block mating faces. For 1.6 and 2.0 litre 4-cylinder diesel engines remove the timing belt and undo the bolts (seven for 1.6 litre engine, five for 2.0 litre engine) and remove the water pump from locating dowels, recovering the gasket and O-ring seal, as applicable. Clean any residue of the old gasket off the mating faces. For 5-cylinder diesel engine, open the cooling system, remove timing belt, brake vacuum pump and lower torque rod. Insert a camshaft locking tool in the aperture revealed by the removal of the vacuum pump, then undo the four bolts to remove the upper timing belt sprocket and the three bolts holding the rear timing belt cover in place. Undo the seven bolts for the water pump and slightly move the back timing belt cover forward. Support the engine from above with an engine hoist and move the engine slightly to the right, and the water pump forward a bit. Then, move the engine back to the left and remove the water pump from the locating dowels. For refitting, a new gasket and O-ring seal where applicable, to locate the pump in position, apply a little thread-locking compound and tighten the bolts in a diagonal sequence progressively to the specified torque. Finally, refit all the components as described and replenish the cooling system.
