Volvo V70 Intake Manifold

The Volvo V70 Intake Manifold directs cleaned air, or air-fuel mixture, to every cylinder in an even stream that enhances power and throttle response. The air column bounces in its smooth runners to form a Helmholtz resonance, forcing additional oxygen into the chambers to allow the Volvo motors to breathe efficiently over the entire rev range. The early V70 models applied heavy cast iron or aluminum, which were heavy but heat-soaking; later models substituted these with lightweight composite plastic, a move that cools the charge and decreases weight when compared with the original Volvo cast units. There are two predominant designs, a basic fixed-length pattern and a variable-length design, which uses moving internal flaps. The fixed style maintains the same path, which provides predictable mid-range response, whilst the variable setup shortens runners at peak rpm to yield top-end surge and lengthens them at low rpm to achieve stronger torque, allowing a single manifold to be applied with many driving moods. One half of the housing screws together and closes to the head with the use of gaskets, and any broken Intake Manifold joint would leak air, leading to a lean mixture, rough idle, and performance loss. The thermostat and the coolant and intake air temperature sensors can be placed in coolant passages, which the computer takes into account to adjust fuel and spark. In total, the new Intake Manifold lightens and cools down the new Volvo engines and makes them more efficient.

Volvo V70 Intake Manifold Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What precautions should be observed before working on the Intake Manifold in the fuel system on Volvo V70?
    A:
Before working on any part in the fuel system, see the precautions to be taken. Begin the removal process by disconnecting the battery negative lead. Next, take off the fuel rail and injectors and then the motorised throttle control unit. Take note of their fitted positions and disconnect the various vacuum hoses from the manifold. Remove the oil filler cap by unscrewing, and remove the cover over the ignition coils by unscrewing the Torx screws. Release the clamp on the engine breather hose to the camshaft cover. Undo the bolt or nut to lift the oil level dipstick guide tube bracket off the manifold. Slacken the lower row of manifold retaining bolts and then remove the upper and outside bolts to remove the manifold from the engine, discarding the gasket. Be aware that some models may have a support bracket fitted to the underside of the manifold and this should be undone and detached. For refitting purpose, you need to reverse the removal operations using new manifold gasket and new injectors seals and O-rings if the injectors need to. Locate the manifold gasket from the cylinder head and place the manifold in position, being careful to use the lower bolts to hold the gasket in position during refitting. If applicable feed the crankcase ventilation hose up between the 2nd and 3rd duct, and tighten the bolts to the specified torque setting.
