Volvo V50 Oil Filter

The Volvo V50 Oil Filter is the watchdog for the engine that prevents debris from getting into the four or five cylinder powerplants, ensuring the engines get a constant supply of clean lubricant. The Oil Filter filters as much as 99 percent of pollutants by squeezing pressurized oil through a full-flow cellulose or synthetic media element, allowing the pump to pump up enough oil to maintain constant pressure even on cold starts or during spirited driving. Past versions of the compact wagon applied the already known spin-on canister, which puts the media, anti-drainback seal, and pressure relief valve all within the same metal shell which is replaced at each service, and the release of the new V50 models uses an eco-friendly cartridge which is housed in a permanent shell that doesn't need as much metal waste as you replace at every service and which is easier to check which contaminants have been captured. Both types have spring-loaded bypass valves which open in case of extreme cold, thick oil, or a clogged element that would cut off flow to starve bearings. Performance or high mileage use requires timely replacement due to the limited capacity of the media, which once filled up cannot stop the formation of sludge. Frequent oil and filter changes thus increase engine life, reduce corrosion, and ensure that Volvo engines are running smoothly well beyond the 100,000-mile mark, an objective that is aligned with Volvo reliability expectations and as a consequence explains why an oftentimes unexamined Volvo component, the Oil Filter, has such a huge burden on it that it is the responsibility of every Volvo driver.

Volvo V50 Oil Filter Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What should you consider regarding the oil filter before beginning the oil change procedure on Volvo V50?
    A:
Before you start the procedure, make sure that you have all the tools you need and a lot of rags/newspapers for spills. It is best to change the oil when the engine is fully warmed up as warm oil and sludge flows out easier. Take care not to touch any hot parts of the engine and wear gloves to protect against any skin-irritating products in used engine oils. Access to the underside of the vehicle is facilitated by having a hoist, ramps or axle stands, to ensure the vehicle is level or the drain point is at the lowest point. Remove the engine undershield to get to the sump and drain plug, then place a draining container under the drain plug and unscrew it keeping the plug pushed down in the sump while unscrewing the last couple of turns. Allow the oil to drain completely and discard the old sealing washer and replace it with a new one after cleaning the drain plug and its threads. Remove all tools and old oil from under the vehicle, prior to lowering the vehicle. Renew the oil filter then take off the dipstick and oil filler cap. For the 1.6 litre engine bring in it (fill it up with the right grade and type of oil, but start half the recommended amount and allow it to settle before adding more until the dipstick reads at the lower mark). Start engine and check for leaks around the oil filter seal and drain plug and refit undershield of engine. After the engine is turned off, wait for the oil to settle down and check the level in the dipstick again, filling it with more oil as needed. For 2.0 litre or 5-cylinder engines you need to add oil up to two-thirds between the minimum and maximum marks of the dipstick. Properly dispose of used engine oil For oil filter renewal, remove the plastic cover on the engine, find the oil filter and remove elements if necessary for better access. Under a socket on an extension bar, remove the oil filter housing cap and remove the old oil filter and its O-ring seal, clean the oil filter housing, place some clean engine oil on the new O-ring seal, place the new oil filter element into the oil filter housing cover and screw the filter cover back on the engine and tighten it to the specified torque.
