Volvo V50 Intercooler

The Volvo V50 Intercooler assists the turbo engine on the small wagon to generate more powerful, safer energy by lowering the temperature of the air that has been forced through the turbocharger. When the exhaust gas turns the turbine that is fitted to the compressor, it forces additional oxygen into the intake manifold; however, the compression raises the charge, and thus the Intercooler is installed to cool the excess heat before the engine burns additional fuel, with the burn increasing the engine by 30 to 40 percent of its potential without damaging efficiency. Cold air is more dense, and thus any degree of cold air cutoff adds valuable molecules of oxygen. The industry and Volvo production lines offer two broad designs that are available on the V50 range depending on engine layout. A typical air-to-air device directs the hot charge through aluminum tubes and a series of motions that directly dissipate the heat to the surrounding airflow, resulting in minimal weight and minimal plumbing cuts. An air-to-liquid design, which is heavier due to carrying coolant, uses a core in water or glycol, followed by a radiator and pump to remove the heat, a system that is popularized when there is limited space or airflow. Whatever the kind, the Intercooler is placed following the last compression stroke to ensure that all the cylinders are fed the identical chilled, rich blend to ensure the exemplary performance and normal fuel economy that is typical of the Volvo turbos. The Volvo unit is also kept healthy through careful oil changes and clean filters that ensure that bearings and blades are not subjected to heat and grit, allowing the owners to reap the benefits over the long run.

Volvo V50 Intercooler Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and reassemble the intercooler on Volvo V50?
    A:
To get started, remove the front bumper by removing the clips and removing the plastic bumper bar cover. Next, undo the upper screws holding the lower air baffle in place, keeping in mind that they are not the easiest screws to get at and may take some patience to undo. Then, loosen the clamps and unconnect the air pipes from the intercooler and finally, unbolt the bolts on both sides at the bottom of the intercooler. Slightly lift the intercooler so the hooks are disengaged and then lower the intercooler down, being sure to first undo the intercooler mounting bolts on each side. For the 2.4 litre models, disconnect the wiring plug for the manifold absolute pressure sensor before removing it. To reassemble, follow the reverse procedure of the disassembly process.
