Volvo V50 Intake Manifold

To ensure that the air or air-fuel mixture that supplies each cylinder flows smoothly and efficiently, the Volvo V50 Intake Manifold balances and diverts the supply. It is located immediately after the throttle body and creates a system of runners, dividing the charge flowing through it to ensure that each combustion chamber in a Volvo engine gets an equal supply, which is required to achieve a steady idle, high torque, and clean emissions. Previous petrol models that applied either single-point injection or a carburetor, which sprayed fuel directly into the manifold itself, and more recent multiport models injecting the fuel at the ends of the runners, with the new gasoline direct injection models merely delivering fresh air through the Intake Manifold and then spraying fuel directly into the cylinders, illustrate how the style of delivery has changed throughout the V50 range. Some of these traditional cast iron or aluminum units have been replaced gradually by lightweight composite plastic, reducing mass, keeping the intake charge colder, and adding durability to the Volvo assembly. There are those which are designed in two halves, the upper and lower parts, which are closed by gaskets, and most of them have coolant passages where the thermostat is mounted and sensors indicating coolant and air temperature, which the computer must adjust to fine-tune its operation. Select engines also utilize variable-length runners in the Intake Manifold, which change the distance of the tract on the fly, with the help of Helmholtz resonance and the Venturi effect, to increase low-end pull or high-rev breathing as the need arises, and this continues to emphasize the Volvo push for variable-length runners.

Volvo V50 Intake Manifold Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and refit the intake manifold for diesel engines on Volvo V50?
    A:
On models with the 1.6 litre (80kw) or 2.0/2.4 litre engine the intake manifold is integral with the cylinder head cover. For the 1.6 litre (85kw) engine, start by disconnecting the battery negative lead, remove the manifold absolute pressure sensor. Instead of removing the fuel filter, undo the three bolts to remove the fuel filter housing, release the clips for the fuel filter pipes and cable harness, and move them to the side. Disconnect the air inlet pipe at the throat from the throttle body and the induction pipe flange at the back of the cylinder head, and remove the EGR valve assembly from the cylinder head by removing the wiring plug and undoing the securing bolts. Withdraw the manifold after removing the bolts at the inlet pipe flange and those holding it to the cylinder head. For the exhaust manifold on 1.6 litre engines, disconnect the turbocharger and the nuts that hold the exhaust manifold to the cylinder head. For the 2.0 litre 4-cylinder engine, this means removing the plastic cover, draining the cooling system and disconnecting different parts such as the battery and gearchange cables. Remove driveshafts if necessary, suspend engine and undo bolts to remove lower torque rod and steering rack. Lower the subframe if necessary and disconnect the EGR cooler and remove the air intake ducting. Disconnect the turbocharger's wiring and oil pipes, and unclip the heat shield and undo the nuts holding the exhaust manifold. For 5-cylinder engines do something similar to get rid of the exhaust manifold and the turbocharger, and be sure to drain the cooling system and disconnect some pipes. When refitting, inspect the manifold studs for damage, make sure there is no damage to mating surfaces, install a new gasket and tighten the nuts to the specified torque, using high temperature anti-seize grease on the studs and filling the cooling system as needed.
