Volvo V50 Ignition Coil

The component that transforms the mild 12-volt supply of the battery into the tens of thousands of volts required by the spark plugs to launch the small engine is the Volvo V50 Ignition Coil, which allows the small engine to start off cleanly and pull hard. It is at the intersection between the low-voltage primary side and the high-voltage secondary side, and it contains two copper windings around an iron core that are applied to store magnetic energy and release it as a burst of 15,000 to 40,000 volts each time the ECU switches current to the primary side. In previous Volvo configurations a single coil was fed to a rotating distributor, though more recent designs have changed to packs that discharge two cylinders simultaneously in a waste-spark pattern, with most current Volvo four-cylinder designs having a Coil-on-Plug design where each Ignition Coil is bolted directly to the spark plug and there are no high-tension leads. Both styles have the same physics, but pack differently; the distributor pack requires a cap, rotor, and long plug wires; the waste-spark pack has two or more coils in the same pack, whereas the COP pack provides each cylinder with its own slim tower, providing quicker voltage rise and improved combustion control. Overworking of an Ignition Coil and resulting misfires, rough idle, or a glowing warning lamp can be caused by heat, vibration, or stretched plug gaps, and therefore owners of a V50 should keep in mind that broken housings, corroded terminals, or high resistance are indicators. Regular checkups will make a Volvo run smoothly, efficiently, and responsively.

Volvo V50 Ignition Coil Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and refit the ignition coils on Volvo V50?
    A:
To remove the ignition coils from 1.8 and 2.0 litre engines, pull the plastic cover first up straight from its mountings. Disconnect ignition coil wiring plugs by pressing down the clips It's safest to work on one coil at a time, although all four can be removed if they're marked for position. Each coil is fastened by a bolt, which should be undone before gently pulling the coils from the cylinder head. For 2.4 litre models, the intake manifold or cylinder head cover is the first part that needs to be taken off. If removing the ignition coils for cylinders 1 or 2, remove the clips and remove the timing belt upper cover. Again, disconnect the ignition coil wiring plugs, one at a time if possible, or all 5 if marked. Unscrew the coil retaining bolt and pull the coil and HT cap out of the cylinder head recess. For refitting, align the coil with the mounting bolt hole and lower it firmly on to the spark plug tightening the retaining bolt to the given torque. Finally, push the wiring plug in until it clicks into position and finish by reversing the steps above to remove it.
