Volvo V50 Oxygen Sensor

The Volvo V50 Oxygen Sensor monitors unused exhaust oxygen per second to allow the engine computer to adjust fuel flow and achieve cleaner power and reduce emissions. Each unit is mounted in front of and after the catalytic converter with a platinum coated zirconia tip that fits into a vented steel shell screwed directly into the pipe. A built-in heater will raise the tip to approximately 600 degrees Fahrenheit within seconds, so that the readings remain accurate even on cold mornings. Voltage changes between 0.1 and 0.9 tell the control module whether the mixture is rich or lean and the injector is immediately altered to save fuel and treat the catalyst. All 2004 to 2012 gasoline or diesel Volvo V50s have engines with at least two sensors, one in the front end that directs the mixture and another in the back that measures the health of the converters and turns on the warning lamp when efficiency is lost. Subsequent Volvo engines have a wideband variant that measures current over a wider range, refining response in hard acceleration or towing.
