Volvo V50 Wiper Linkage

The Volvo V50 Wiper Linkage is the key mechanical component that converts motor rotation into the sweeping motion that ensures the windshield is clear at all times throughout the year. The Wiper Linkage lies between the electric motor and the two wiper arms and converts the rotating shaft motion into an arc that runs back-and-forth, which is needed to remove rain, snow, and road spray in order to give the driver a full view of the road. When the dash switch is flicked, an electronic signal is sent to a relay that switches the motor on, and the connection passes that torque instantly through its rods and pivots across the entire plate, moving each blade in perfect synchronisation with the others. Volvo applied the same basic design throughout the entire production run and relied on heavy metal arms with low-friction bushings, so, when purchasing, clients did not have to deal with different styles or generations; rather, the constant reliability became the characteristic feature. There are no different versions of the same, which also makes selection easier in case a replacement is required in the future, since any actual Wiper Linkage unit manufactured over the years will fit on the model and will operate in the same way. The fact that regular Volvo drivers have performance reliability also means that they can expect predictability, and technicians do not need to struggle with various schematics, as they can easily diagnose faults by looking at the loosely jointed or seized pivots. Simply put, Volvo made the system simple, and there is no need to have the V50 unprepared in the event of sudden downpours, since a linkage designed to perform its wiping in a very smooth, synchronised way has been tailored to suit the car.

Volvo V50 Wiper Linkage Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and refit Windshield Wiper Motors and Wiper Linkage on Volvo V50?
    A:
To remove the wiper motor, switch the wipers on and off to make sure the motor and linkage are parked. Next, remove the windscreen wiper arms then the plenum cover and cover over the wiper motor if applicable, which means pressing in the centre pin, prising out the rivet and removing the cover. Disconnect the wiper motor wiring plug, then undo the four bolts to maneuver the wiper motor linkage from its position, remembering that the linkage is held by three bolts around the motor area, as well as one at the outside end. Carefully prize the linkage arm from the balljoint stud with a screwdriver, and for refitting purposes, take the measurement of the distance between the arm and the end stop. Remove the arm from the motor spindle by undoing the nut and then remove the motor by undoing the 3 Torx bolts. For refitting purposes, put the motor and linkage back, reconnect the wiring plug, and run the touch wipe button to position the motor in the rest position. Refit the crank in the same position as it was when removed based on the distance previously measured and tighten the holding nut firmly, completing the process by working in reverse of the removal process.
