Volvo V50 Fuel Injector Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What precautions should be taken to prevent dirt from entering the fuel injector or injector pipes during the procedure on Volvo V50?
    A:
Caution should be taken to keep dirt out of the injection pump or injector pipes during the procedure. If the injectors are to be fitted out again, all the openings should be plugged, and they must be stored in an upright position in the same order to ensure that they are reinstalled in their original positions. For 1.6 litre engines, start by removing clamps and the air pipe or inlet manifold as appropriate. Disconnect wiring from glow plugs and remove the injector wiring guide, and then disconnect wiring plugs from each injector and the leak-off pipe. Clean the area around the high-pressure fuel pipes and unscrew the pipe unions being careful not to move the unions of the injectors. Remove any covers and unscrew the injector retaining screws, carefully pulling the injectors out of their position, without damaging the solenoid housing. For other engines, remove cylinder head cover or air cleaner housing as needed, making sure to make the area around the high-pressure fuel pipe unions clean. Turn off the fuel return hoses and undo the unions to get the high-pressure fuel pipes, which you should discard and prepare for fuel spillage. Disconnect the wiring plugs and remove the injectors, discarding the sealing washers and covering the injector holes to prevent entry of dirt. When refitting, make sure that the injectors and cylinder head seats are clean and dry, and fit new parts if necessary and tighten the new high-pressure pipes to the correct torque. The refitting process should reverse the process of removal while inspecting the condition of fuel return hoses, making sure wiring is correctly reattached, making sure the injector will work with the engine with a parts specialist, and possibly updating the engine management software if new injectors are installed. Once the engine is started, check carefully for any fuel leaks.
