Volvo V40 Ignition Coil

The major job of the Volvo V40 Ignition Coil is to step up the battery's twelve volts to up to forty thousand volts to allow the spark plugs to ignite the fuel mixture and sustain the engine in operation. Each coil is housed, and the two copper windings are wrapped around an iron core; the thick primary winding forms the magnetic field when current is on, and the fine secondary winding takes the sudden burst when the field collapses, all of which provide towering voltage over the high tension tower. Early versions of Volvo applied a single coil to supply a distributor, in which a rotor rotated within the cap to direct the charge to all the cylinders using high tension leads. With the advance of electronic controls, Volvo adopted distributorless packs, containing two or more coils, which generate a high spike of spark to paired cylinders with each revolution of the crankshaft, a design generally referred to as waste spark. The new design of most later Volvo petrol engines is a coil-on-plug with one Ignition Coil located directly in front of each spark plug, which reduces the weight, removes the long wires, improves throttle response, and prevents misfire due to heat and vibration. No matter the arrangement, fraying plug gap or corroded connection causes the Ignition Coil to overwork and may result in the V40 stumbling, lighting the check engine light, and burning lots of fuel.

Volvo V40 Ignition Coil Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and refit the ignition coil on Volvo V40?
    A:
For non-turbo models up to the 2000 model year, start by disconnecting the battery negative lead, then remove the screws to detach the plastic cover panel from the top of the engine. Next, release the plastic lugs and disconnect the twin HT leads from the ignition coil terminals, followed by unplugging the LT wiring from the ignition coil at the connector. Slacken and withdraw the securing screws to lift the coil from its mounting bracket, and refit by reversing the removal operations. For models from the 2000 year onwards, the removal and refitting of the later coilover-plug ignition coils follows a similar process as described for turbo models. In turbo models, begin by disconnecting the battery negative lead, then remove the screws to detach the plastic cover panel from the top of the engine. Unplug the LT wiring from the side of the coil unit and the HT lead from the terminal at the side of the coil unit. Slacken and withdraw the securing screw, grasp the tabs at the side of the coil unit, and withdraw it from the cylinder head cover. Refitting is a reversal of the removal process.
