In order to remove the steering knuckle, firstly perform the necessary operations, and then unscrew the holding nut and disconnection of the steering track rod end balljoint from the steering knuckle by balljoint separator tool. Then undo the two nuts and remove the bolts that secure the suspension strut to the steering knuckle, taking note of the orientation of the bolts, because new nuts and bolts will be required for reassembly. After that, undo the nut, and remove the clamp bolt holding the suspension control arm balljoint to the steering knuckle, pushing down on the suspension arm with a stout bar if necessary to release the balljoint shank. If the balljoint is tight, spread the slot in the steering knuckle, using a chisel or large screwdriver, taking care not to damage the balljoint dust cover. Free the steering knuckle from the suspension strut and remove the driveshaft CV joint from the hub flange. If necessary, undo the four bolts and remove the hub carrier assembly from the steering knuckle (note that for reassembly, you will need new bolts) Before refitting, remove all traces of metal adhesive, rust, oil, and dirt from the splines and threads of the driveshaft outer CV joint and from the hub carrier mating surface on the steering knuckle, if removed. Where applicable, locate hub carrier assembly on steering knuckle, refit new bolts and tighten them progressively in diagonal sequence to specified torque settings using torque wrench, followed by specified angle using angle-tightening gage. The remaining process of refitting is a reversal of the removal process, and includes particular attention to thoroughly cleaning the hub and brake disc mating faces and aligning the orientation marks when refitting the brake disc. Coat the splines of the outer CV joint with a 3 to 4mm wide bead of metal adhesive prior to pushing it into position on the hub flange and lubricate the threads of the CV joint and driveshaft retaining nut with engine oil prior to refitting the nut; use a new nut if in any doubt about the condition of the old one. Tighten all nuts and bolts to specified torque, using torque wrench then further to specified angle using angle-tightening gauge. Make sure that the ABS sensor and the location of this in the steering knuckle are clean before fitting it again and when you have finished check the front camber angle and have it adjusted by Volvo dealer.

How are the Steering Knuckle and front Wheel Bearing removed and refitted on Volvo V70?

The hub bearing is a sealed, pre-adjusted and pre-lubricated double row ball type with an expected service life of the car for its entire service life without service. The bearing housing, hub flange and the bearing are serviced together as an assembly and cannot be taken apart or renewed separately. To remove the hub assembly, loosen the front wheel bolts, raise the car on its jack and place it on axle stands before removing the front roadwheel. Next, slacken and remove the driveshaft bolt, with an assistant depressing the brake pedal to prevent hub rotation, removing the old bolt for a new one. Undo the nut that holds the anti-roll bar link to the shock absorber, counterholding the nut with a torx bit. Remove the ABS wheel sensor and wiring from the suspension strut bracket and undo the bolts holding the brake caliper and lock limiter bracket to the hub carrier, remembering that new bolts will be required for refitting. Slide the caliper assembly off of the disc and suspend it. Check the position of the brake disc against the hub, making a mark if necessary, and then remove the bolt fixing the brake disc to the hub. Free the driveshaft CV joint from the hub flange by tapping it inwards before disconnecting the steering track rod end balljoint from the hub carrier. To maintain the camber setting when reassembling, measure the distance from the hub carrier mounting lug to the back of the shock absorber. Remove the bolts that fix the hub carrier to the shock absorber, note the direction of the insertion of the bolts, then remove the suspension control arm balljoint from the hub carrier, being careful not to damage the dust cover. Swivel the hub carrier assembly outwards and pull the driveshaft CV joint out of the hub flange. Finally, undo the four bolts to pull the bearing housing assembly out of the hub carrier, remembering that new bolts will be needed for reassembly. Before refitting, clean all surfaces of metal adhesive, rust, oil and dirt, find the bearing housing on the hub carrier and refit the new bolts, tightening them in diagonal turn order and to the recommended torque settings and angles. When refitting the hub carrier to the shock absorber, make sure the measured distance is maintained, clean and aligned the hub and brake disc mating faces, lubricate the CV joint threads and driveshaft retaining bolt with engine oil, and make sure the ABS sensor and where it is kept clean before refitting. Finally, tighten all nuts and bolts to specified torque (the driveshaft bolt should be tightened using a torque wrench first and then through the specified angle using an angle-tightening gage).
