Volvo Starter Relay
The battery current is supplied to the starter solenoid of the engine (when you turn the key) through the Volvo Starter Relay. It also isolates high current from your dashboard switch to improve component life. The Starter Relay gets a low amp signal from the ignition switch and it snaps shut within milliseconds. Once that relay closes, a heavy duty path is created from the battery to the motor. This condition remains so until the engine fires. As it does, the Starter Relay opens up.
