Volvo S80 Oil Filter

The Volvo S80 Oil Filter protects the engine of the sedan by trapping dirt and sludge so that new oil keeps all the moving parts slick and cool. It has the primary duty of filtering out virtually everything while letting oil flow freely through pressurized tubes for thousands of miles, a trade off achieved through coarse cellulose or synthetic filter material rated at up to approximately 99 percent efficiency. Volvo made the S80 available over the years with two major layouts of filters. The previous designs usually applied a disposable spin-on canister that screwed directly to the block, combining the strength of a steel housing with both built-in pressure relief and anti-drainback valves that prevent dry starts. Newer models changed to a safer, replaceable cartridge that fits into a more permanent housing, which lessens waste but still requires the same discipline to make sure that the media is replaced when it becomes dirty enough to hold. Devoted Volvo drivers appreciate the environmental advantage of this change. Regardless of the style, the Oil Filter has to be able to withstand bursting caused by high-pressure oil produced by thicker lubricants and high-volume pumps, as a ruptured filter will reduce pressure, allow metal-to-metal contact, and decrease the life of the engine. Full-flow design prevails, in which all circulating oil is directed over the media, with certain systems also including a negligible bypass path to allow ultra-fine polishing of the lubricant when longer service periods are needed. It is easy to ensure that any Volvo engine remains clean, quiet, and durable with regular oil and Oil Filter changes.

Volvo S80 Oil Filter Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What should you consider regarding the oil filter before beginning the oil change procedure for diesel engines on Volvo S80?
    A:
Before you start the procedure make sure you have all the tools you need and lots of rags or newspapers in case of spillage. It is best to change the oil when the engine is warmed up to normal operating temperature as warm oil and sludge flow out easier; but avoid touching hot parts of the engine. To be protected from skin irritants and contaminants contained in used engine oils, it is a good idea to wear gloves. Access to the underside of the vehicle is easier if the vehicle is lifted on a hoist, run up ramps or held up in axle stands ensuring the vehicle is level or that the drain point is at the bottom of the vehicle. Remove the engine undershield to gain access to the sump and drain plug, place a draining container under the drain plug and unscrew it keeping the drain plug pressed into the sump while unscrewing the last couple of turns. Allow the oil to drain completely, removing the drain plug sealing washer and fitting it with a new one after cleaning the drain plug and drain plug threads. The oil filter is at the front side of the engine and can be accessed from above by pulling the plastic cover straight up. Use a 36 mm socket or adjustable spanner to undo the filter cover and remove the old filter element and discard the old O-ring seal and fit a new one. Clean the inside of the filter housing and cover with a lint-free rag, put a light coating of good engine oil on the new O-ring sealing and fit it to the filter cover before inserting the filter element and turning the cover tightly to specified torque. After having removed the old oil and tools that are under the vehicle, lower it to the ground, remove the dipstick and oil filler cap and fill the engine with the correct grade and type of oil, adding half of the recommended amount first and then adding oil until the oil mark on the dipstick is reached. Start the engine and let the oil pressure warning light go out while checking for leaks around the oil filter seal and drain plug and refit the engine undershield. After switching off the engine and letting the engine oil settle, recheck the dipstick level and add more oil if needed. Finally, dispose of the used engine oil in a safe manner and within the scope of environmental regulations.
