Volvo S80 Oil Pan

Volvo S80 Oil Pan is the under-engine reservoir, which maintains a constant supply of lubricant in readiness every time we are on a journey. With the conventional Volvo wet sump system applied in this Volvo sedan, the oil collects in the pan following circulation through the bearings and cam journals, after which the pump pulls out the oil in the pan and forces it back through the block, forming a continuous cycle of protection that lowers friction and heat. The bottom of the crankcase is also closed by the pan to ensure that valuable fluid does not leak onto the road. There are two types of lubrication systems, wet and dry sump. A dry system stores the oil in an external tank and uses an additional scavenging pump to evacuate the crankcase. This design was selected because of the nature of track machines that corner so hard that the oil would slosh out of the pickup tube. Since the G-force encountered during daily driving is much lower on a vehicle, the sedan will continue with the simpler wet sump design requiring only one pressure pump and the on-board Oil Pan to accomplish the task. Over the years, stamped steel or lightweight aluminum versions have been made to save weight and heat, but the shape, bolt pattern and internal baffles are the same and any factory-spec Oil Pan will still fit neatly under any Volvo engine that was made for the S80 series.

OEM parts are the only choice for top quality and real functionality. They pass strict checks, and they match Volvo's factory specs, so installation is easy. If you need new Oil Pan and you want quality and fit. You will find both here. Our site has a wide range of OEM Volvo S80 parts. The prices are unbeatable, allowing you to get value for money. Volvo S80 Oil Pan Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and refit the oil pan for diesel engines on Volvo S80?
    A:
To remove the engine, first lift the front of the car and put it up on axle stands. Next, remove the screws to remove the undershield of the engine and the engine oil. Remove the oil level dipstick guide tube from the oil pan by undoing the bolt/nut, remove, if applicable, the oil cooler secured by four bolts (avoid oil spill). Pull the plastic engine cover straight up and remove the engine cross-stay between the suspension turrets. Underneath the car, take the front mounting screw for the charge air pipe, and then remove the upper nut from the mounting for the hydraulic engine at the back and disconnect the vacuum hose discarding the nut for a new one. Release to uncouple the front hose from the charge air pipe, sealing the opening to the pipe to prevent dirt from entering. Remove the lower screw of the hydraulic engine mounting in the front and discard it for a new one and there remove the screw/nut holding the lower torque rod to the transmission bracket. Undo the screws holding the charge air pipe to the transmission casing and place a trolley jack underneath the back edge of the transmission casing and raise the casings slightly in order to remove the charge air pipe. Slacken the bolts fastening the oil pan and remove all but one in each corner, then gently tap the sides and ends of the oil pan until it drops away and remove the remaining bolts and discard the O-rings at the R.H. end/front edge of the oil pan for new ones. For refitting cleaning the contact faces of the oil pan and the block, apply a thin layer of Volvo liquid oil pan sealant to the oil pan mating face and position new O-ring seals on the engine block face. Refit the oil pan casing and retaining bolts (tighten finger-tight at first), making sure that the longest bolts are at the oil pump end, and the shorter ones at the transmission end of the oil pan casing. Tighten the oil pan to transmission bolts to the specified torque settings, and then tighten the oil pan to engine bolts in pairs from the transmission end. Complete refitting to ensure new engine mounting nuts and bolts are fitted, oil cooler to oil pan O-ring seals are renewed, all fasteners are tightened to their specified torque, a new engine oil filter is fitted and the engine is filled with oil.
  • Q: How to remove and refit the oil pan for petrol engines on Volvo S80?
    A:
To remove the oil pan, first jack up the front of the vehicle and secure it carefully on some axle stands. Then, undo the screws and remove the engine undershield, and then drain the engine oil. Undo the bolt or nut and pull the oil level dipstick guide tube from the oil pan. If it is fitted with an oil cooler, this is held to the oil pan by four bolts, undo these bolts and pull the cooler to the rear of the engine, being prepared for the potential spillage of oil. Undo the bolt holding the fuel pipe bracket on the oil pan and remove the wire plug from the oil level sensor. Remove all the bolts attaching the oil pan to the engine, leaving 1 bolt in each corner just slackened a couple turns. Gently tap the sides and ends of the oil pan until the joint breaks and undo the remaining bolts then remove the oil pan and discard the O-rings at the right hand end and prepare to fit new ones. For refitting, make sure you have clean mating faces of oil pan and engine without any residue of the gasket. Apply a thin layer of Volvo liquid sealant to the oil pan mating face by using a short-haired roller. Fitting the O-rings and refitting the oil pan, bolt it in each corner, finger tight only. Insert the oil pan to transmission bolts and tighten them to specified torque and then refit the remaining oil pan to engine bolts, tightening them to specified torque starting at the transmission end. Complete the refitting by making sure you reattach the oil cooler to the oil pan with new oil cooler O-ring seals, oil level dipstick tube is refitted with a new oil level dipstick O-ring seal and oil filter is renewed before filling the engine with new oil.
