Volvo S80 Fuel Filter

The Volvo S80 Fuel Filter is the guard dog of the sedan, which filters out debris and water on their path to the pump or injectors. Since Volvo designs its systems with very limited tolerances, even fine grit acts as sandpaper, thus it is crucial to have a clean stream of fuel. Contemporary gasoline and diesel mixes continue to accumulate dirt, paint flakes, rust, and microbes on the way out of the storage tanks to your tank, and once this accumulation gets into the system it can overwork the pump, scuff injectors, and result in hard starting, rough idle operation, or stalling. To prevent such destruction, Volvo puts a first defense strainer in the tank, then a replaceable in-line cartridge that depends on pleated paper to trap fine solids and still permits constant flow. In some carbureted models, this cartridge was inserted between the mechanical pump and carburetor, or directly at the carburetor inlet, but in subsequent electronically injected models, the part was mounted along the line between tank and engine, and may be positioned either under the body or in the engine bay, with either threaded fittings or quick-disconnect couplers. S80 diesel models introduce a bowl-type Fuel Filter and water separator, to allow lighter water to drain away whilst occasionally fitted with a sensor or heater to ensure that waxy deposits do not accumulate and stop the flow during cold weather. Regardless of the layout a Volvo has, changing it on time at the suggested frequency keeps fuel clean, maintains lubrication, and shields the expensive parts, therefore making the Fuel Filter a big difference in a small package.

Volvo S80 Fuel Filter Parts and Q&A

  • Q: Where is the fuel filter located and How to replace it for petrol engines on Volvo S80?
    A:
The fuel filter is located under the rear of the car, just forward of the fuel tank on the right-hand side. Begin by raising the rear of the vehicle on ramps or driving it over a pit. Clean the area around the fuel pipe couplings at each end of the filter and cover both with absorbent rags. Relieve the fuel pressure before disconnecting the fuel pipe connections by using a valve similar to a tyre valve fitted in the fuel line supplying the filter; unscrew the valve cap, position a container or wad of absorbent rag under the valve, turn your head to one side to avoid any fuel spray, and depress the valve stem for a few seconds to release the initial spurt of fuel, then refit the valve cap. Disconnect the quick-release couplings by depressing the release button, being prepared for fuel spillage as the couplings are released, and plug the couplings after disconnection to prevent further loss of fuel. Undo the filter mounting strap retaining bolt and remove the filter, then fit the new filter, ensuring it is oriented the same way as the old one by observing the arrow on the new filter that indicates the direction of fuel flow. Secure the filter with the mounting strap and push the fuel pipe couplings back onto the filter outlets. Finally, run the engine and check for any leaks.
  • Q: How to renew the fuel filter for diesel engines on Volvo S80?
    A:
Be sure to renew the filter when the fuel tank level is less than 3/4 full. The fuel filter is under the right side of the car in front of the rear roadwheel. Place a container underneath the filter and then loosen the drain screw on the underside of the filter and let the fluid drain. Use a strap wrench or filter removal tool to unscrew the filter from the housing, being prepared for spillage of the fluid. Some models have a spin-on cartridge filter and others have a renewable paper element, where applicable, pull the paper element out of the filter housing. For models with a spin-on cartridge, put a smear of clean diesel around the filter seal and then fit the new filter to the housing as well. By hand tighten the filter until the seal is in contact with the housing and then tighten another 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn. For models having a paper element, be sure to put the small O-ring seal on the top of the element and then put the large O-ring seal on the filter housing. Fit the new element to the filter holder, and then fit the assembly to the housing, locating the top of the element in place in the housing. Tighten the filter by hand until the seal touches the holder, and tighten it another 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn. Turn the engine on and test for leaks.
