  Each time you are working on any component in the fuel system, take necessary precautions. Begin by disconnecting the battery negative lead. Remove the back seat and fold the carpet from the car's floor forward to reveal the fuel tank access covers. Undo the nuts and take the access covers over the fuel pump and fuel level sensor on either side. Trace the wiring for the fuel level sensor or pump and disconnect the appropriate connector, remove any cable ties and lead the wiring back through the fuel level sensor aperture in the floor. Press in on buttons to open the hoses off the pump/fuel level sensor. Unscrew the retaining collar of the fuel level sensor with suitable tools, and remove the sensor from the fuel tank, which will compress the clip to slide the fuel transfer ejector from the sensor and remove the sensor cover, and disconnect the wiring plug from the underside of the sensor cover, and the O-ring seal will be recovered. Attach a piece of wire to the transfer ejector hose to help with refitting. Unscrew the retaining collar of the right-hand fuel level sensor, and lift it carefully out of the tank making sure to hold the float arm down in its lowest position while maneuvering the assembly out of the tank. Free the routing wire from the plugs and leave it so that it can be refitted, the O-ring seal is recovered again. If required, the right-hand fuel level sensor may be unclipped from the fuel pump assembly. For refitting, connect the routing wire to the plugs/hose assembly, insert the fuel level sensor whilst ensuring the float arm is in the correct position, and reconnect the wiring plugs to the underside of the left-hand fuel level sensor, detaching the routing wire afterwards. The rest of the refitting process is a reverse of the removal process, new seal smeared with petroleum jelly, fuel level sensors as per arrows on covers pointing towards the rear of the vehicle, wiring over the top of the fuel tank and reconnecting and securing with cable ties as required.

Unscrew the left-hand fuel level sensor plastic retaining collar using appropriate tools, then withdraw the left-hand fuel level sensor from the fuel tank. Depress the clip to slide the fuel transfer ejector from the sensor and disconnect the wiring plug from the underside of the sensor cover, recovering the O-ring seal from between the sensor cover and the tank opening. Attach a length of wire to the transfer ejector hose to aid refitting. Unscrew the right-hand fuel level sensor retaining collar from the tank, carefully lift the fuel level sensor while holding the float arm in its lowest position, and manoeuvre the assembly from the tank, ensuring the wire attached to the plugs is long enough to prevent it from disappearing into the tank. If necessary, the right-hand fuel level sensor can be unclipped from the fuel pump assembly. For refitting, attach the routing wire to the plugs/hose assembly and insert the fuel level sensor, ensuring the float arm and float are positioned correctly. Reconnect the wiring plugs to the underside of the left-hand fuel level sensor and detach the routing wire. The remainder of the refitting process involves reversing the removal steps, using a new seal smeared with petroleum jelly, positioning the fuel level sensors with the arrows on the covers pointing towards the rear of the vehicle, and routing the wiring over the top of the fuel tank before reconnecting and securing with cable ties as needed.
