To remove the exhaust manifold, first disconnect the negative lead from the battery. For
Turbocharger engines, remove the turbocharger, undo the bolts to take off the heat shield from the exhaust manifold, undo the support bracket from the cylinder block, then undo the nuts to remove the exhaust manifold, discard the nuts and gaskets for new ones. For non turbocharged engines, first remove engine cross-stay between front suspension brackets, then remove preheating pipe from heat shield, and then remove heat shield. Next, loosen the roadwheel nuts on the front left hand side, jack up the car securely and remove the roadwheel. Remove the engine undershield, release the wire from the oxygen sensor and undo the nuts holding the exhaust section in front to the manifold. Remove the screws holding the crossmember under the exhaust pipe, free the brake pipe from the clips and gently push the front section of exhaust pipe backwards off the exhaust manifold studs, taking care not to damage the oxygen sensor wiring. Finally, undo the nuts and lift the manifold upwards from the engine compartment and the gaskets for new ones. For refitting the cylinder head and exhaust manifold, make sure the mating faces are clean, install new gaskets over the studs, use anti-seize grease on the manifold studs, position the manifold, fit the washers and new nuts and tighten them to the specified torque. Complete the refitting reversing the removal steps, by using new nuts in the front section of the exhaust pipe, tightening all the fasteners to their specified torque, and reconnecting the battery negative lead.
