Volvo S70 Sway Bar

The Volvo S70 Sway Bar is an important element that will help the car remain flat when it takes sharp turns and when the road becomes uneven. The bar serves in place of a powerful torsion spring made of steel that connects the left and right wheels by short lever arms, twisting on itself when the body wishes to lean so the suspension receives additional roll rigidity and the cabin remains significantly flatter. It is a very basic concept and the predecessor to soft spring coils, but it became widespread after the 1950s when the softer coil springs emerged, and when the S70 was released the feature was now routine. Similar to most other Volvo models, the system is mounted at the front axle and rear axle and provides balanced handling without too much weight. Every known S70 variant uses one basic style instead of several exotic ones, and thus the driver will not be presented with conflicting choices based on alterations in bar diameter to no avail and changing the mechanism, even though the mechanism remains the same. Since Volvo has adjusted the suspension not only for control but also comfort, the Sway Bar does not substitute for the springs but only works with the existing dampers to reduce body roll without leaving the ride rough. This silent, efficient Sway Bar is available today in every Volvo based on the same platform to assure the owners that they are safe when turning around every corner and pothole.

Volvo S70 Sway Bar Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to properly remove and refit the rear Sway Bar and transverse arm mounting on Volvo S70?
    A:
Chock the front wheels, raise the rear of the vehicle on axle stands. Remove the exhaust silencer left hand rubber mounting and attach the silencer as high as possible with a cable tie etc. On the left-hand transverse arm, find the right-hand transverse arm mounting nuts, undo the outside nut and remove the bolt. Use a punch to mark the edge of the transverse arm mounting that is seen inside the trailing arm hole to make sure the mark is clear for alignment during refitting to maintain the rear wheel toe-in setting. With the transverse arm mounting position marked, undo the nut and remove the other mounting bolt - note that both transverse arm mounting nuts and bolts have to be replaced during refitting. Remove the two nuts and mounting bolts used to secure the sway bar to the left-hand trailing arm, making note of the different lengths, and their locations, as new nuts and bolts will be required for refitting the bar. At the other end of the sway bar, remove the two nuts and mounting bolts, the purpose of which is to secure the sway bar only when it is necessary to refit it, and then remove it from its place. To refit, place the sway bar in position and fit the new bolts and nuts holding the sway bar to the left-hand trailing arm and the other end to the transverse arm without tightening at this stage. Loosely fit the inner transverse arm mounting bolt and nut with new parts, bringing it to the position of the datum mark made at the time of removal, and tighten just enough to hold the position. Install the new outer mounting bolt and nut then tighten both nuts to the specified torque using a torque wrench then final tightening of both nuts to specified angle using an angle-tightening gauge. Tighten the sway bar to transverse arm and sway bar to trailing arm nuts to their specified torques, using a torque wrench and further tightening to specified angle where applicable. Finally, refit the left hand rubber mounting of the silencer and lower the car on the ground.
