Volvo S70 Fuel Filter

The Volvo S70 Fuel Filter is the gasoline diesel security guard of the car and it works by blocking dirt, rust and water before they get to delicate injectors. Even highly refined fuel has microscopic grit that can grind parts of the pumps and block nozzles, hence Volvo is equipped with a two-stage defense. The tank has a coarse strainer inside, which removes larger particles, and beneath the floorpan or in the engine bay, an inline canister performs the fine filtration with pleated paper which captures the particles just behind the fuel rail. Carburetor-based early Volvo models occasionally mounted a small canister immediately before the carburetor, whereas some later electronic injection models like the S70 make use of the pressurized inline unit which is larger in cross-sectional area and pressure to handle large flow. Diesel types incorporate a water-separating bowl or spin-on cartridge which enables the heavy droplets of water to collect at the base, usually with a heater to prevent wax crystals in low temperatures. Some Fuel Filter housings are sealed with threaded fittings with O-rings, and some have quick disconnect clips, which can be easily released with the help of a single tool, but either can be replaced in a matter of minutes during regular service. Not attending to this portion forces the pump to work harder, starves the cylinders and invites corrosion, resulting in hard starting, rough idle and slow acceleration. Replacing the Fuel Filter every so often as Volvo recommends helps to keep the fuel clean, safeguard the costly parts and maintain the enthusiastic attitude that the owners of the second generation S70 desire.

Volvo S70 Fuel Filter Parts and Q&A

  • Q: Where is the fuel filter located and How to replace it on Volvo S70?
    A:
The fuel filter is located under the rear of the car, just forward of the fuel tank, and it is important to note the mounting strap bolt. Begin by disconnecting the battery negative lead. Raise the rear of the vehicle on ramps or drive it over a pit. Clean the area around the fuel pipe couplings at each end of the filter thoroughly, then cover both with absorbent rags. Relieve the fuel pressure before disconnecting the fuel pipe connections by using a valve similar to a tyre valve fitted in the fuel line supplying the filter. Unscrew the valve cap, position a container or wad of absorbent rag under the valve, turn your head to one side to avoid any fuel spray, and depress the valve stem for a few seconds to release the initial spurt of fuel, then refit the valve cap. Disconnect the quick-release couplings using a 17 mm spanner to push back the coupling sleeves, being prepared for fuel spillage as the couplings are released, and plug the couplings after disconnection to prevent further loss of fuel. Undo the filter mounting strap retaining bolt and remove the filter. Fit the new filter, ensuring it is oriented the same way as the old one, and observe the arrow on the new filter indicating the direction of fuel flow. Secure the filter with the mounting strap and push the fuel pipe couplings back onto the filter outlets. Finally, reconnect the battery, run the engine, and check for any leaks.
