To remove the air cleaner assembly, start by loosening the hose clip and detaching the air inlet duct from the throttle body, then disconnect the crankcase ventilation hose at the air cleaner cover or air duct, and for later models, also disconnect the secondary air inlet hose leading to the lower section of the fuel rail. Next, disconnect the wiring connectors from the mass airflow sensor, inlet air temperature sensor, or secondary air injection pump as applicable. If necessary, release the HT lead to the ignition coil from the clips at the rear of the cover and disconnect the two vacuum pipes from the inlet air temperature vacuum control valve at the rear of the cover, noting their fitted positions. Spring back the retaining clips, lift off the cover, and remove the air cleaner element. Detach the cold-air inlet duct from the air inlet adjacent to the radiator and the warm-air inlet duct or turbocharger inlet duct from the air cleaner housing or exhaust manifold, as applicable, and on turbo models, detach the turbo control valve from the air cleaner housing if fitted. Lift the housing upwards at the engine side to release the lower retainers, then move it sideways to disengage the side locating peg and remove the housing from the car. All ducting is retained by snap-fit connectors or hose clips, and while the routing of the ducts varies between normally-aspirated and turbo models, removal is straightforward. To access the lower ducts, the air cleaner assembly must be removed, and refitting is done by reversing the removal operations.
