To replace the front seal, first remove the
Timing Belt. Hold the crankshaft sprocket in position, while loosening its center retaining nut and if the Volvo holding tool 999 5433 is not available, make a homemade one similar to the camshaft sprocket holding tool with the prongs in a straight position and appropriate holes drilled. Next, remove the four bolts that hold the crankshaft pulley onto the sprocket and then attach the tool to the pulley with two of the bolts, hold the tool securely and undo the sprocket center retaining nut with a socket and bar. After removing the tool, remove the pulley from the sprockets and insert two retaining bolts, and pull the sprockets off the crankshaft by using a two-legged puller to engage the two legs of the puller with the protruding bolts. Carefully remove old oil seal without damaging oil pump housing or surface of crankshaft, or punch or drill two small holes in the oil seal, screw in self-tapping screws and pull on them with pliers. Clean the oil seal location and crankshaft and look for any wear grooves or ridges. Lubricate the housing, crankshaft, and new seal and fit the seal with the lips inwards and using a tube or the old seal inverted tap the new seal into the housing until flush. Refit the crankshaft sprocket and pulley in reverse order and end with the timing belt. For the rear seal, remove the
Flywheel or driveplate, replace the old seal with a new one and then reattach the flywheel or driveplate.
