Volvo S70 Oil Filter

The Volvo S70 Oil Filter is the watchdog of the engine, which filters abrasive material that the oil may contain, and thus clean lubricant reaches all moving surfaces. Within its steel structure is a pleated maze of cellulose, synthetic strands, or a composite sheet, and the selected media prevent up to 99 percent of dirt while still allowing pressurized oil to pass through without starving. The majority of S70 automobiles have a full-flow system, that is, all of the oil forced out of the sump is filtered and passes through the filter before wetting the crank and cam, and an anti-drainback valve maintains the galleries filled overnight, and a pressure relief valve opens when the oil thickens in winter and could cause the housing to rupture. Most Volvo models in the past applied spin-on cans, but in a bid to meet the requirements of the environment, subsequent models of Volvo have moved on to a replaceable cartridge, which once inserted in a permanent cap will also give the same protection but will reduce the amount of metal waste. The two styles have the same job but are different in the service approach in which the former uses the Oil Filter as a whole unit while the latter is swapped like an ink refill and the top is reused. Ordinary duty filters are acceptable in normal driving, and high-strength ones are applied to counter the surge caused by high-volume pumps and heavier oil grades in order to prevent collapse under high-pressure conditions. Replace the Oil Filter whenever the oil swap is scheduled since once the dirt capacity is filled, the flow decreases and the grit that is unfiltered may grind valuable horsepower, and this may reduce the life of your Volvo engine.

Volvo S70 Oil Filter Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What should you ensure regarding the oil filter before beginning the oil change procedure on Volvo S70?
    A:
Before starting the procedure make sure you have all the tools you will need and lots of rags or newspapers for spills. It is best to change the oil when the engine is warmed up to normal operating temperature as warm oil and sludge flow out more easily, however, do not touch hot parts of the engine. Wearing gloves is a good idea to protect you from scalding and harmful contaminants in used engine oils. Access to the underside of the vehicle using a hoist, ramps or axle stands is improved ensuring either that the vehicle is level or that the drain point is the lowest point. For earlier vehicles removal of the engine undertray may be required for access to the sump and filter. Place a draining container underneath the drain plug and unscrew the drain plug and hold the plug into the sump and unscrew the last few turns of the sump. Let the oil drain completely out, inspecting the sealing washer on the plug and changing it if needed. The oil filter is at the base of the sump at the front right hand side, move the container back under the filter, slacken the filter with a filter removal tool and unscrew by hand (being prepared for some oil spillage). Wipe the cylinder block around the filter mounting clean and make sure the rubber sealing ring from the old filter has not stuck to the engine. Apply a light coating of clean engine oil to the sealing ring on the new filter and screw it into position until it is seated and tighten it firmly by hand. After getting the old oil and tools out from underneath the vehicle, lower it to the ground. Remove the dipstick and oil filler cap and fill the engine with the correct grade and type of oil, filling half of the specified amount and letting it stand before adding more until the level reaches the dipstick's lower mark. Starting the engine will cause the oil pressure warning light to stay on for a few seconds, do not race the engine during this time. After running the engine for a few minutes check for leaks around the oil filter seal and drain plug. Switch off the engine and wait for the oil to settle before checking the dipstick level again and adding more oil if needed. Finally, dispose of the used engine oil in a safe manner and in compliance with environmental regulations.
