New flywheel/drive plate retaining bolts will be needed for refitting. For removal of the flywheel on models with manual transmission, remove the transmission and the clutch assembly first, and then make alignment marks in order to fit it correctly. Loosen the bolts of the flywheel but ensure the crankshaft is not turned by inserting a large screwdriver in the teeth of the ring gear against an adjoining dowel. Support the flywheel, remove the bolts and lower it carefully so that it does not drop. For the drive plate on models with automatic transmission, remove the automatic transmission and make marks for alignment when refitting the drive plate before unbolting and removing it. During the inspection of the flywheel, it is necessary to inspect the clutch mating surface of the flywheel for deep scoring, cracking and damage which may require renewal or surface grinding, and the ring gear for wear. For automatic transmission models, check the torque converter drive plate for distortion, hairline cracks and wear on the teeth of the ring gear; any evidence of damage requires renewal. For refitting the flywheel on manual Transmission models, clean the mating surfaces, remove any locking compound in the crankshaft holes, reverse the removal operations, apply thread locking compound on the new retaining bolts and tighten to the specified torque before refitting the clutch and transmission. For automatic transmission models, follow the same procedure as for manual transmission without any steps that deal with the clutch and refit the transmission.
