Remove the timing belt and camshaft sprocket then recover the sprocket locating key from the end of the camshaft. Carefully prise or pull the seal out of its place. Clean out the seal housing and the sealing surface of the camshaft by wiping it with a lint free cloth, making sure to remove any swarf or burrs that could cause leaks. Apply a small amount of oil to the new camshaft oil seal and put it over the end of the camshaft with the lips facing inwards. So to prevent the lips of the seal from being damaged, tape a small piece of tape over the end of the camshaft. A special tool of Volvo can be used for fitting the seal, but if not available, a deep socket of suitable size can be used, which should only contact the hard outer surface of the seal and not the inner lip. It is important that the seal is fitted square to the shaft and seated fully, apply a little clean oil to the oil seal inner lip and use a socket or similar tool to drive the seal into position until flush with the casing surface. Finally, re-fit the camshaft sprocket and timing belt.

Remove the engine top cover panel by disconnecting the battery negative lead. Remove the full air cleaner assembly and inlet ducts as required to provide good access to the end of both camshafts on the left-hand side of the cylinder head from the driver's seat. Unscrew the bolt and release the fuel pipe support bracket at the end of the cylinder head. Carefully take off the sealing cap from the left hand end of the cylinder head to expose the end of the inlet camshaft, taking care not to drop any debris into the camshaft oil return hole. Disconnect the wiring from the camshaft position sensor from the connector at the back of the engine compartment. Remove the screws and release the wiring harness guide from the end of the cylinder head. Undo the two screws and remove the camshaft position sensor housing from the left hand side of the cylinder head, undo the bolt and remove the sensor trigger wheel from the end of the exhaust camshaft. Carefully remove the seal prising it out with a small screwdriver or hooked tool taking care not to damage the shaft sealing face. Clean the seal seat and inspect the sealing face of the shaft for wear or damage that may lead to premature failure of the new seal. Lubricate new oil seal Fit new oil seal over shaft with lips inwards, tap home large socket or piece of tube until outer face flush with housing Note If end of camshaft shows signs of wear caused by old seal it may be necessary to drive new oil seal into its housing by a further 2mm Refit camshaft position sensor wiring harness guide camshaft sealing cap fuel pipe support bracket, reversal of removal procedure. Finally, re-fit the air cleaner and ducts, reconnect the battery and re-attach the engine top cover.
