Volvo 960 Ball Joint Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to check and replace the ball joint on Volvo 960?
    A:
Check the play on the ball joint at the axial and make sure that the axial play is not greater than 0.12 inch (3mm) and the radial play is no more than 0.02 inch (0.5mm). For the 240 Series, jack up and safely support the vehicle, mark the position of the wheel stud closest to the valve, remove the wheel and tire assembly and remove the ball joint nut from the knuckle. Remove the 4 bolts holding the ball joint and remove the ball joint from the Control Arm, then remove the ball joint retaining nut and squeeze the ball joint out. When installing, make sure that you use the correct ball joint for each side, press it into place, install it on the control arm and tighten the bolts to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm). Attach the ball joint to the knuckle and tighten to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm) then install the wheel and align with the previous marking and lower the vehicle. For 700, 900, S90 and V90 Series, repeat similar initial steps and then remove the anti-roll bar link bolt, cotter pin, nut and washer for ball joint stud. Use a suitable puller to separate the control arm from the ball joint, take off the bolts fastening the ball joint with the spring strut, and press the control arm downwards to separate the ball joint. Install the new ball joint using new bolts, applying sealing fluid to the threads, making sure that the bolt heads are flat, and tightening to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm) plus an additional 90 degrees. Reattach the control arm to the ball joint, secure with washer and nut, Tighten ball joint stud to 44 ft. lbs.(60 Nm), install cotter pin, reattach anti-roll bar, install wheel and lower vehicle. For 850, C70, S70 and V70 Series, lift and support the vehicle, remove the wheel and remove the three nuts securing the ball joint to the lower control arm. Remove the clamping bolt and nut from the Steering Knuckle and spread the ball joint apart and remove it from the hub housing. Clean the control arm and steering knuckle, install the new ball joint with the clamping bolt and the nut, tightening the same to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm). Connect the ball joint to the lower control arm, fixing it with new nuts, applying rustproofing compound, and tightening at 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm) followed by an angle tighten of 120 degrees. Finally install the wheel and lower the vehicle.
