Volvo 740 Fuel Rail Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install the fuel rail and injectors on Volvo 740?
    A:
To remove and install the fuel rail and injectors for 2.3L 4-Cylinder and 2.8L 6-Cylinder engines, relieve the pressure in the fuel system and disconnect the negative battery cable. Label and remove electrical connectors from the injectors, and remove fuel lines from the fuel rail and retaining bolts from the fuel rail. For the 2.8L engine, it's recommended to remove the fuel rails one at a time, remove the fuel rail and injectors in an assembly. For installation, lubricate the O-rings on the injectors with petroleum jelly, install the fuel rail assembly making sure the O-rings are properly seated, tighten the retaining bolts, and reconnect the fuel lines and the injector connectors before connecting the negative battery cable and starting the vehicle for leaks. For 2.3L and 2.4L 5-Cylinder engines and 2.9L 6-Cylinder engines start by taking a cover off the throttle pulley and shield over the valve on the fuel rail then relieve the fuel system pressure and disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove or disconnect the upper air charge pipe, fuel rail cover, injector connectors, fuel line clips and disconnect the vacuum hose from the pressure regulator. Remove the fuel rail retaining bolts and remove the rail with the injectors. During installation, rubber dampers should be in the injector ports; install the rail into the intake manifold; and make new bolts in the fuel rail, tightening them with 7.5 ft. lbs. (10 Nm), including the fuel line clips, injector connector with rubber seal, fuel rail and throttle pulley covers, and upper air charge pipe. Finally, attach the negative battery cable back and start the car to see if it is leaking.
