Volvo 740 Fuel Filter

The Volvo 740 Fuel Filter is designed to protect the engine since it traps dirt, rust, water, and other debris before they pass through vulnerable pumps and injectors, maintaining constant power and extended component life. Even refined fuels absorb pollutants in storage tanks and vehicles, and therefore the filter serves as the last line of defense, where pleated paper media are applied to filter the particles and allow clean gasoline or diesel to pass. The first filter fitted in all Volvo 740s is a tank strainer for the electric pump, and the actual filtration occurs further downstream, the choice of design being dependent on the powertrain. The early carbureted cars use a simple in-line Fuel Filter installed between the mechanical pump and the carburetor or at the very outflow of the carburetor; this design is effective at countering grime but is easy to change should the flow become restricted or other problems such as rough idle become apparent. 740 EFI versions use a high-capacity in-line Fuel Filter that is installed under the floorpan or in the engine bay, connected by threaded or quick-disconnect fittings that are sealed by O-rings to provide the increased cleanliness that pressurized injection requires. Diesel models incorporate a water-separating spin-on element that allows denser water to be drawn off in a bowl, usually with sensors or a heater to prevent the formation of wax, corrosion, and microorganisms in pumps. Volvo drivers have to replace the filter as often as the manufacturer suggests, or even earlier in case starting becomes difficult, as a clogged filter deprives the engine of fuel, which can lead to costly damage, and regular Volvo service is essential.

Volvo 740 Fuel Filter Parts and Q&A

  • Q: Where is the fuel filter located and how often should it be replaced on Volvo 740?
    A:
The fuel filter is located underneath the vehicle near the fuel tank or the driver's side of the firewall and it is recommended to change the fuel filter every 60,000 miles (96,000 km) or immediately, if there are evidences of dirt in the fuel system. To start off, relieve the pressure on the fuel system and disconnect the negative battery cable. Raise and safely support the vehicle and remove the fuel filter cover, if equipped. Have a container to catch residual fuel when loosening the fuel lines. Put a suitable container in place and loosen the fuel filter connections. For vehicles having threaded type fittings, remove the lines from the filter with the correct size wrenches. If it has quick-connect fittings, use a 17mm wrench to push down on the retaining tab on the fitting and remove the line, repeat on the other line. Remove the clamp holding the fuel filter to the bracket. For installation purposes, transfer the bracket to the new filter, taking note of the direction on the fuel filter before installing it to the bracket. Connect the fuel lines to the filter, for threaded type fittings, install the lines, make sure to get the copper seals in the correct position, and fasten to the correct torque. For quick-connect fittings, push the fittings onto the ends of the filter until it is heard to click into place. Finally, install the fuel filter cover if equipped, lower the vehicle and reconnect the negative battery cable.
