If axle shaft removal is a part of a general overhaul of the rear axle, all the oil seals should be renewed, which means removing and renewing the taper bearing even if it looks OK. If it is not possible to press off the bearing and the locking ring, the locking ring can be removed by drilling and splitting or drilling with a 1/4 in. (6 mm) drill but being careful not to drill all the way through to the axle shaft. Then remove the inner seal from the axle casing and followed by the removal of the bearing with a press or appropriate extractor and finally the outer seal. Clean the bearing well and give it a final wash in white spirit to remove any old grease and cleaning fluid and inspect it thoroughly for signs of wear or blueing, renewing it if necessary. Reassemble with new oil seals and new bearing if required and even if the old locking ring is intact, it must be renewed. Finally, press or drive on the locking ring, making sure that all the assembly is as close as possible to the shoulder on the axle shaft, and check the oil level.
